Case head seperation

Dear Mr. Guffey,

I can only imagine the frustration you must experience trying to relate your superior knowledge to us mere mortal reloaders.

Time and again, you relate the same information in the futile endeavor that we will somehow come to the conclusion that you have been right all along.

I often wonder why you spend the time and energy on such a fool's errand.

We know what we are talking about, and understand the vernacular as it applies to the subject of reloading.

Any further obfuscation on your part only serves to muddy the waters.

OK back to something more serious..

It has to be over bumped shoulders. Right now, the OP,s numbers and technique looks legit. However it is always possible that there was a mishap at one time, and basically that's all it takes to cause the problem you are seeing.

"I just trashed a couple hundred Lapua 223 cases after 4 firings. I had one separate on me which got me to looking at the rest of them. Some had no signs, some had light discolored lines near the case heads but not detectable cracks, and some had cracks you could feel with your fingernail. I use a Redding type S die and have measured my shoulders when FL resizing to only bump 2-3k when sizing. I recently checked my comparator with the method of removing the firing pin assembly and chambering, sizing, chambering, sizing until no resistance is felt from the case and the numbers match what I have been bumping back to within .001, so it's not an over bumping shoulder issue. Could it be that my die is squeezing the cases too small in diameter near the datum line and causing this issue or something else? This is my ftr rifle chambered with a PTG match reamer."

Regardless of all of your measurements, if you are getting head separations, then you are creating headspace when you are full length sizing. It cannot come from any place else.

Whatever "bump" space you make, the case stretches that much on the next firing... keep on making more bump space, and you keep on stretching the case.... until it falls off.

Why are you full length sizing the little 223 case?? It is such an easy peasy case to load.

I have close to 30 heavy loadings on my Lapua 223 cases, neck sized with a Redding Comp Neck Sizer. And there are no signs off any problems in the future.
