Case for REALLY Long Competition Guns

Currently, my F-Class Rifle is 49.5", I'd like to get a 5" longer barrel, putting me at 54.5". This is barely enough to fit in a Pelican 1770, with no padding on either end, and I can't find anything else that is longer.

Before I drop $400 on a case that barely fits, and has no side handle, what other options do I have for a long, hard case?

Yes, I did a search and all I found was a two year old thread with the 1770 and not a lot of other options that are valid.

Check out the Kalispel gun cases made in Montana and sold by http://www.guncases.us/kalispel-gun-cases.html. When I recently bought a nice BR rifle from another member here, he shipped it to me in one of those Kalispels. Really stout, with a very secure locking mechanism.

Their scoped .50 cal rifle case is 61" on the inside.

That's the case i use for my rifle now with a 32 inch barrel, very nice case.

Is the Kalispel case airline approved? Didn't see this description on the website.

Dunno. Ask them.

It survived something much worse than the airlines though.... UPS ground, Montana > California > Montana.

I have a question why are your barrels so long that you need special case lengths.
Stan

The current competition (6XC) rifle is a mere ~27" barrel. I have a 30" replacement barrel waiting in the wings for it. I'm working on building a 7mm rifle for better long range performance and want a (shocking) 32" barrel. Hardly .50 cal stuff here...

This one at bullets.com might fit the bill. The description says its 59" on the the outside and its only $60.

I have an Storm IM3300 that will fit my rifle with a 32" barrel, fit diagonally.

That being said, I never use it. When I travel, I pull the action out of the stock and use a Pelican 1750. Seems like less hassle and the airline counter gives me less crap about being oversize.

+1 on this idea

There's a good argument for this approach not stressing the stock bedding when handled roughly. Even my 34" .300 WSM barreled action is only 44" and the stock 34", allowing use of a large number of cases. Just make sure that you protect the stock bedding area.

You might want to consider a double-decker, padded, hard case; wherein, the rifle is broken down to stow the barreled action in one foam padded side and the stock in the other? I'm not sure they are manufactured any more, though...don't even have a manufactures name handy. I acquired mine back in 2000 when I was regularly flying overseas and in the US with a Palma rifle. The double-decker hard case is 41"x10"x10", and is strapped securely inside a 6-foot long, two-wheeled, oversized duffle bag, with a tag-along strap. Both sides of the hard case are padlock-able. I could easily get all my shooting gear and rifle in the bag. PM me if you are interested in some pics.

I'm primarily interested in a case for transport by driving (not airline). I went ahead and bought the Bullets.com version, if that doesn't work, I'll buy a more expensive one.

I don't want to have to break down and reassemble my gun every match (especially if I'm not flying).

Thanks to all for the options.

I started to suggest that very soft case (if that is what you're are referring to on Bullets.com) to you Catfur, but I took it that you were after a "hard" case! Certainly, that is a good case for long guns...I use 3 of them. Thing about them, if you find out that they are not compatible with your rifle...you can always use them for sleeping bags. ;)
