Case Ejection Problem

I just got a Rock Island Armory M14Y last week used. Great little gun.

I've taken it to the range twice. The first time I didn't really have a problem with it but today I had spent case ejection problem. Quite e few times the spent shell wouldn't fly out but just sit there causing the next round to get jammed. I think a lot of it had to do with the ammo. It was hollow point. I tried some round tip and it did better.

When I got the gun home and was cleaning it I looked close at the bolt which has two "claws" on it that grab the case to pull it out. I cleaned it really good and lubed it really good. I loaded the mag with some new round nose ammo and cycled them through the gun. I had some problems with them not ejecting but it was a lot better.

One thing I did was try different bolt cycling speeds. Faster seemed to work the best. I don't know if the faster speed helped the bolt do it's job or maybe the lube was getting worked into the claws more.

Has anyone had a problem like this? If so how did you solve it?

M-14's, M1A's, and m-1's are all gas guns and gas guns are very picky about ammo. One can only use 4895 it reload for a m-1 rifle. A good choice for the M-1a is ww-748. Stick as close to 150 gr bullets as you can. You will get a better response to your question under the Reloading Forum.

I googled the rifle, it's a youth model .22lr bolt action rifle. Appears to be a lower cost offshore piece. Sorry, no help to the OP on his issue. He has posted it in the correct sub-forum though.....IMO

When the fired brass gets knocked off the bolt face, it can be caused by the next round in the magazine riding to high.
Try a different magazine or adjust lips on the magazine, if metal.

two "claws"

A rounded one is used to hold the rim into the extractor on my Rem 581 bolt. The other is the extractor. Dont know about yours?

Well, it looks like I (we) solved the problem. It turns out so it looks that the Picatinny rail I put on the top of the gun was blocking the cases from ejecting. I also have to make sure I pull the the bolt all the way back until it stops because there is an extractor in the back of the receiver that the case has to hit, it's the main part that flings the case out.

The cases weren't hitting all the time so I didn't really consider the rail being the problem.

I took it to the store and through process of elimination the guys that work there, me and a customer figured it out. The customer is the one that suggested it might be the Picatinny. This made sense because last week when I shot it for the first time I didn't have that on the gun, I used tall mounts. It wasn't until after that I started having problems. I thought maybe I hadn't cleaned and lube the gun good enough after shooting it last week.

Maybe the manual found at this link will help. The link will download a .PDF version to your computer. The bolt has to go back far enough for the case to hit the "ejector" part 1406.
