Cartridges used to win national championships

Does anyone know where I can find data on what the winning cartridge was to win the National long range sling championship at camp’s Perry and Atteberry from the mid 90s up to present day?

John

Not sure if that's compiled anywhere or not, might have to go back year by year and see who won to figure it out. A few I know off the top of my head:

2018 Kevin Nevius won shooting a 6.5x47 Lapua
2017 John Whidden won shooting a .243 Winchester

2012 David Luckman won shooting a .308 with Sierra 2155's - amazing.

I would expect you will find 30 magnums in the 90s, 6.5 284 after that, a few 308s mixed in, more 6.5s of different flavors, and then the 243s and 6mms.

In my opinion, there has been a trend away from recoil as the bc has improved.

In my opinion, I'd be less worried about the cartridge that won, and more interested in the individual that one. I'd be willing to bet that the given winner of each year could have won using just about any of the common cartridges now a days. Its the time and effort that makes you a winner, not by just picking the most popular round.

I agree. I believe that if you’re a good shooter you’re probably better off with a lower recoiling cartridge than say a 284. This applies to sling only. I was just curious as to when the trend began. Kent Reeve won it in 2003 or 4 with a 300 win mag. I’m sure we won’t see that cartridge again. There were at least 2 wins with 7mms over the past 15 years, but other than that I believe all the wins were with 6mms with the exception of this year and the 308 win

I believe the long range agg includes Palma scores too, so that going to be 308s. You can't win the agg if you don't agg well there.

I think Michelle uses(d) a 6.5-284 in the any rifle matches, and I believe Sherri uses a 260 Rem.

John Whidden shoots a 243

It's been written above already, but it ain't the chambering.

Thanks for everyone's input so far.

Every shooter does shoot the Palma course of fire but they don't have to shoot .308, just have to use iron sights. Most of the LR National Champs use scopes for the matches that allow them, Leech/Wimbledon. There is different classes in the LR agg and the separate Bert Rollins trophy for the Palma rifle aggregate shooters.

I would have to argue one point...to shoot the Palma match at the nationals you have to use a Palma rifle, or a service rifle that is also categorized as a Palma rifle.

By the NRA rules:

For the 2018 national matches, in particular the Palma match:

So, yes you can shoot an any rifle in the Palma match at the national matches, but the score will not be part of the long range championship aggregate...you will be competing "out of competition".

In the late 1980's, I submitted the first rule for an NRA Palma rifle to the high power committee. They used it.

A rifle with metallic sights in 308 or 30-06 was about all it said. It allowed the M14/M1A or M1903, M1917 or M1 in 30-06. Was written that way so if one if those was all someone had so more people could shoot the match.

Add 6.5-08 (Now 260 Remington) and 6xc for some of David Tubb’s wins. I don’t know what he used before those.
