Cartridge love...i mean real obsessive love

Almost 40 years ago l saw my first prairie dog. While searching for a rifle to use on my first prairie dog shoot l found a used Winchester Model 70 in 222REM. lts still my favourite caliber for prairie dogs. lt seems almost everyone on earth has a 223Rem. l have one too. 0bsolete, unpopular calibers seem to attract me. l recently traded/sold about a ton of lead for a 222Rem Magnum in 40X. My very first MAGNUM rifle!

My personal round is one that if I only had 1, which will never happen, for hunting big game is a 7 SAUM,.
It will handle anything in North America and does it with less fuss & recoil than anything else. Also extremely easy to tune and extremely accurate. Plus a huge bullet selection. Brass is readily available and I can now order it any day of the week in stock thru many suppliers.

Favorite cartridges have equated to phases through out my life. Some has never lost their luster. My whole family used 270s for big game growing up, anybody that brought an 06 to camp was frowned upon. I still own a pre64 featherweight that was my father’s but I eventually out grew of the tunnel vision and now own 3 06s. I guess my all time favorite is the triple deuce, I own several vintage and custom rifles in that chambering and it always puts a smile on my face. The simple 6BR is another one, I’ve owned several variants but I still have a soft spot for the standard 6BR. Quarter bores always brighten the day, the 257RI and the 25-06 especially.

Lately, as in the last five years, I discovered the 45-70 and 45 Colt. Both versatile cartridges offered in some of my favorite firearms.

Im sure I will discover more, some I’ve ignored my whole life and some that I haven’t even heard of yet. This life is too short to experience them all, which is a pity.

I think when someone says they "love" a particular cartridge, they are saying that it satisfies all of their shooting and hunting needs. They don't love it as in the romantic meaning of love. Or, maybe they do?

I grew up listening to the 270 vs3006 debate, and my dad had a 270. I still have a few 270s, and appreciate every thing that people have discussed for years about them, sentimentally, (or practically) give me a 270 any day. Looking at a 3006 I would love one, it has to be a wonderful cartridge. But I don’t think I could own one LOL. Somehow I have a 308 that I really like, I’ll probably add another one. One other odd thing, somewhat related to cartridges we just like, one thing that I worry too much about are barrel length and actions… a 308 with a 24 inch or longer barrel? No! Give me a 20 or 22, and it better be a short action, not a long action with a stop in the action. 270 with a 22 inch barrel? Hard pass give me a 24!
