Yes, that is a carbon ring and it needs to be removed. Perhaps you already know this and it's simply a wording issue but that dark ring isn't the beginning of the rifling, it's the end of the chamber. There is a small gap between the end of the brass neck and the end of the chamber where carbon buildup occurs. So that's what we are seeing here. There are many threads on here that detail carbon ring removal so I won't beat that dead horse.

The trick is to never let it get built up.
That is one advantage we in Short Range have over Disciplines that are not able to clean over an entire course of fire.
We as a rule clean after every group. It never gets a chance to take root.
