Carbide or HSS

;D, 45110, Some of us have been in and around machine shops for many years,45yrs myself, and that has not a thing to do with HSS and carbide. I do have carbide tooling and carbide insert threading tools. I choose not to use them on my "$300?" barrel because I get a better job with HSS.

For the first time about two weeks ago, I threaded a barrel using the Arthur HSS tooling and Viper Venom. It turned out great. Thus far I've only threaded two barrels in my life. The first was about 10yrs ago using a self-ground HSS tool bit. Another area hobbyist asked how I'd gotten such clean threads and was surprised to hear I used an HSS bit. He'd been using carbide. I have no experience threading with carbide so can't comment on what's possible with its use.

Sorry if I offended. Came off like the typical no it all. Wasn't my intension. I started in the shop with carbide cutters. The only place that I've found hss better than carbide is on babbitt. On steel, I get a better finnish with carbide.

Hi Jim,

When you stop and see Mike, tell him you were chatting with an old bald fart in Michigan.

Hepburn,

You didn't offend anybody. Most of us are so old that we can't remember where we left our keys 10 minutes ago. If you ever get a chance to try one of Mike Warners positive threading inserts on stainless steel, at low rpms. You will be amazed at the finish. Just remember to use a good sulfer based cutting oil.
He even sells them one at a time.

+1 on Warner tools and Viper Venom.
I could never grind the HSS tool blanks very well. I was mostly uncomfortable turning at the speeds carbide inserts require. Viper Vids and Warner tools made it all better. Thanks Bob and Mike

Bob,
I visited with Mark yesterday and ordered a tool holder and both 60deg and 55deg. inserts. I was going to order a pkg of inserts as I do with carbide. Mark told me not to do it as they will last a very long time unless I have a crash. Mark is very knowledgeable and doesn't downgrade the carbide. He said as a lot of us know, it has a time and place.
Bob, also Mark said he was going to start selling you dull bits. Said as old as you are he didn't want you to hurt yourself.

Hi Butch,

Next time you talk to Mike, ask him how many rounds you are supposed to shoot in a shoot off at Williamsport for heavy gun? I've been using the same insert for 19 months now and as hard as it is to believe, it's as sharp as the day I got it. However, I might have to buy another wet stone.
