Captain. Dan......help!!! No hogs!

I always managed to see lots of turkey in the open before and after turkey season. It's like they knew when season opened and they stayed out of sight.

At my place it is rare to catch a glimpse of a pig on the trail camera during daylight. Pigs are very smart and will go nocturnal if there is any hunting pressure so definitely during deer season. Corn thrown from the feeder during daylight will sit there all day unless eaten by deer, squirrels, birds and rabbits.

Two weeks ago after an all night pig hunt, I crawled out of the blind and decided to cut down a dead tree near the feeder that had been bothering me for a while. This trip I had remembered to bring my chainsaw so I drove my truck down into the small clearing, pulled out the chainsaw and cut down a 25' cedar tree, policed up the dead limbs, refilled the feeder, moved the truck to the deer blind (50 yards away) and began pulling out all my gear. It was now mid-morning (10:30) and on my 4th trip in an out of the blind I spooked a monster buck 15 yards away... he was between me and my pickup. You know the black truck that smelled like hot exhaust, hot chainsaw on the tailgate, and the bed cover up in the air. I'm holding a sleeping bag and some tupperware with my battery packs for the night optics. That deer was smart... he knew exactly when I would be the most vulnerable. If he had been willing to wait one more minute he could have tapped me on the shoulder with an antler and scared the crap out while I was putting gear in the rear passenger door.

I may have to kill him... I guess this means I'm not as easy going as I like to think I am, and that as I have gotten older I no longer appreciate a practical jokers before I've had a cup of coffee.

I feed corn for deer and get the damn hogs. I really look at them as vermin. In the past I have soured corn with yeast and the darkest nastiest beer I could find. It did work. So does regular corn. Right now the rut is going pretty strong in west Texas. I don't really want to shoot the hogs cause it runs everything out of my valley. But the deer won't come in if the hogs are there, so what do you do? I'll probably build a pin around my feeder out of hog panels next year. Too late for this year. Hogs are ok to shoot in the off season, but I don't want to see any during deer season. Like others have said, be careful what you wish for.

If you go for a walk in the neighborhood and don't see any rooting there aren't any hogs around. At least not close to you. I shot one once while bow hunting with a Texas heart shot. 29 inch 2312 had only the nock sticking out just to the right of the butt.

I've seen videos of some crazy ass rednecks drag em outta the bushes and plunge a knife in their heart.
Not quite what I want to do, I'd be just fine poking them from 20 yards.

Getting a lot of good advice here Josh, especially the "be careful what you wish for." Those dang hogs just love newborn fawns and the like. Those Hill country sheep and goat ranchers lose a lot
of their new born crop to those hogs. Nothing left but a pink spot on the ground. Another sign for hogs in the hill country is large rocks that have been flipped over looking for bugs and such.
If you got 'em, kill them all.

A young lady that worked at Shilen hunted with her dogs and a knife. I asked her what knife that she used. She said a cheap one as she lost some of them.
A pretty little lady that I wouldn't fool with!

The dogs and knife routine started around here with ranchers and later evolved to hunters cause the state passed a law that made armed trespassing a felony. A cur dog and a pocket knife was simple trespassing.

It takes a better man or woman than myself to go that route.

Ive done it some but I always was more confident if I was with 2 of my friends Dick or Troy. They always had good dogs that I knew would not let go of the hog when I was inches away from putting my knee on his neck. I haven't caught one in years.
