cant touch the lands, need ideas plz

i have a model 12 lrpv 6br 12 twist. problem is, as the 12 twist will only stabilize 80g bullets or less, they are too short to get even close to the lands. best i can measure .040-50" is as close as i can get w/ a reasonable amount of bullet seat. that much jump is surely dentrimental to accuracy. the barrel has bout 1400-1500 rounds through it. has anyone else encountered or observed this situation? reckon why savage chose to make the throat so deep w/ a 12 twist? seems convoluted to me. looks like a rechamber is the only solution. any ideas appreciated. thanks greg

thanks much for some guidance, randy. 80g bergers are being loaded. i have .105" of bullet in the case. powder starting at 30g of imr4064 vs 30g varget. will go up w/ each and see what happens. im prolly at .0015 neck tension. .268 bushing was just barely holding bullet so i went to .267. is that enough?
lapua non turned brass. cc450 primers

second year rookie at the dots and i have a lot to learn w/ the wind flags. the more i try to use them the more i out guess myself.

im better at hitting prairie dogs at 300 yds w/ 15mph crosswinds than hitting dots at 100 w/ 5mph winds!!! thanks again greg

Just cuz it has to long jump don't mean it won't shoot. Weatherby has been doing the long jump free bore since they came on to the scene. I've jumped Bergers over .080" and had them shoot as good as any I have ever jammed. Just got to shoot it to see. Don't believe all the hype.

Yeah my 105gr berger hunting vlds like a .050 jump .. just test and see what you gun likes. You might be surprised

Pic is of 4 rounds at 100m once sighted in

I have a LRPV in 12 twist. It doesn't have a long throat. I can touch with 75 grainers, 80 berger, and by the way 87 vmax, shoots very well in a 12tw also. Not sure what the issue is with yours. Maybe the throat is shot out?

What he said. Sounds like throat erosion perhaps caused by hot loads or the powder. Mine lasted almost 3000 rds before the barrel gave out using strictly VVN133. And when she went, it was ugly and obvious. So I got my money's worth out of that original factory barrel. Now my new Kreiger makes me feel good again about this rifle again.

Take it to someone with knowledge and a lathe. They can remove some off the face of the barrel. You can do a re chamber then

the accuracy is bout where it has always been.
i would call it a fair shooter maybe bout average. maybe
i shoot UBR factory and my average score is 473 which is usually bout 4 or 5th place out of 8-12
480 would be 24 (10's) touching a .5" circle @100yds and 24 (10's) touching a 1" circle @200yds
528 would be all bulls
bottom line on a calm day the rifle is a honest .5" shooter w/
bout 1 flyer out of 6.
my brother has a like rifle and his is in the .3 area and they are 2 apart on the serial number. like xxxx84 and 86
just still searching for another .1-.2"
just loaded the 87g vmax to try
thanks greg

The hybrids are a hybrid tangent/segant ogive 105 gr target bullet.

In my LRPV 12 tw, and everyone I know of with it, the 80 berger is THE bullet. I use the 87 vmax for varmints, and it shoots well, but I also sort those. What method/tool are you using to determine your oal?

With jump like that and shooting short distances. Try a flat base bullet and see how it likes it. They don't seem to mind long jumps as much and are sometimes more forgiving with various powders.

What do you consider "reasonable bullet seat"?? You may have more to play with than you think.

80g bergers
.105 bullet seat is where im at now
that gives 2.283 col
case 1.545 + bullet .843 = 2.388
i have no reason for this col cept its bout as long as i can make them and im still 40-50tho off the lands and thats really hard to measure. i dropped a bullet into the chamber and inserted an empty that would barely hold the bullet and pulled them out slowly together.
i thought at the lands or jammed a little was best for accuracy.
thanks greg

i just shot 6 rounds into a ragged hole!!!! :)
they were loaded w/ 80g bergers over 30g varget using cci450 primers
the difference was they were loaded w/ harrells semi custom dies using .267 bushing. i think i just might have found another quarter inch!!! :)

thanks greg
