That won't work it is too simple. Why not rent one?

I use datums, I have a few grinders that grind pilots, they grind angles and they grind tappers and they butt cut.

A good friend of mine and retired machinist from Caterpillar has a way of measuring head space with a ball bearing.

That would be using a gage with a radius, I am the fan of using datums with an unfriendly sharp edge.

How do you grind a "tapper".
Paul, I know how to grind a taper, but not a "tapper".Butch,
You true the wheel to the angle you want to grind. They make a special fixture to grind pretty much any angle or radius that you need. The angle is usually roughed in on the lathe, and finish ground. Fun stuff.

Alan warner had a couple posts here on how to do that some time ago.A good friend of mine and retired machinist from Caterpillar has a way of measuring head space with a ball bearing. Not sure how he does it but he has forgot 10X what I will ever know about this stuff, so I am sure he is getting the right measurement.

Interesting ThanksThat thread is here:

I have since made a spread sheet from my calculations and use it for odd-ball headspace measurements, or to confirm dimensions of a gauge of unknown origin.
