Can you use LR primers in LP cases for reloading.

I have a friend who ignored my warning back in the spring, to stock up on all primers. He has several LR primers, but only 200 LP primers, loads primarily .45 LC and 44 mag. I dimly remember someone saying online, dont remember where, that you could use LR primers by backing the powder load off 1/2 a grain. Any and all replies appreciated.

Large Rifle and Large Pistol primers have different height specifications...enough to get you in trouble if the primers and/or pockets are at either end of their specs. The thickest LR primer can be as much as 0.016" thicker than the shallowest LP primer pocket! Besides the difference in height, the priming mix and cup hardness vary. I'm sure somebody on this forum will come along and say "I did it and I didn't have any problems" but do you feel lucky?

You may be saying to yourself, “Did he fire six shots, or was it only five?” You’ve also gotta ask yourself, “Do I feel lucky?” We’ll do ya, punk?

Rifle primers in hand guns will jump the bullet out in the barrel if you fire a second one big trouble if he needs some large pistol primers i will trade some fore large rifle Jason.

not being able to find large pistol primers will have someone trying large rifle primers no doubt, my buddy told me he was gonna try and do this after trying to talk him out of the idea, he took his k&m rifle primer uniformer cutter took 50 44mag cases recut them seated win LR primers, he cut back his load little bit said load shot good, now his gun is a single action Ruger 44 I'm just the guy reporting this.

Of course recutting the primer pocket made the base of the pocket thinner (read weaker) and with a hotter flame.... Got to be an easier way to lose a finger, but I can't think of one right now. Always discouraging to have friends who don't want to listen to good sense.

I am sure someone in his area will trade LR for LPs if he gets the word out at a local rifle match. One of the pistol shooters at my club came over to the rifle line a few weeks back we arranged a one for one swap. I don't shoot pistol nears as much as I used to so it worked out well for both of us

YEP....look a little harder and you will find some or someone to trade for your LRP.....I need more srp and will trade LRP for them....freakin bat flue
Some guys got H4895 on sunday at powder valley...I got their late but you can find this stuff when it comes up, just have to be at the right place at the right time.
Good luck.
