Can you shoot 2 different sized cartridge heads with the same bolt??

HI
I have a .223 Tikka 595 Whitetail rifle.

Is it possible to still shoot .223 sized rounds if I get the boltface opened up to shoot PPC sized rounds in the same rifle with the same bolt as a switch barrel rifle??

If yes what do I need to be aware of??

How difficult and/or time consuming is turning the rim off the larger round down a bit so the boltface doesn't have to be open up as much?? What issues are there with turning a case rim down? can ir be done on a neck turner with a stepped mandred made up to go in the primer hole and primer pocket?

THanks

some custom actions you can shoot 6ppc and 6br 473 bolt face But with a 223 its that bolt face only or a 22 hornet i could be wrong but i do not think i am

Cut the rim base of the ppc,.445") down to .378",Rebate the rims)

The late Red Cornielson did it with the 6BR on a 222 action with no problems at all and I hear that the WSM cases have been rebated to .473 without issue for use in 243/308 sized boltface rifles.

It is not difficult to turn the rims down to use a smaller boltface. I do it all the time.

Any chance of a simple blow by blow explanation on equipment required and how to set things up?

Is the sinclair hand turner or the Forester bench trimmer got enough strength to turn rims or will it be a lathe job???

I was thinking of getting a madrel turned up to fit into the primer hole with a pint through the flash hole to centre the case to try turning it on the Forester?? or is there a better one??

Is there enough meat on the PPC rim and groove to turn them down to .223 rim size and still have enough for the extractor to grab onto?
OR
Do I need to split the difference and say turn 20 thou a side off the PPC and open the .223 boltface up a bit to suit??

The actions are either a Sako 461 or a Tikka Whitetail,595).

Thanks

It's a job for a lathe... maybe with a case holder setup for zero runout and then drive a case into it and turn the base down, pop 'er out of the holder, repeat if needed. Ha!

Sorry not to follow up on this. I wish that we had email notification when there is a response to a thread that we subscribe to. I put a wilson case holder in a collet in my lathe and cut some off the base so I can get a form tool to the rim. My tool cuts the rim and the groove in front of it in one plunge. As stated before, Red Cornelison did this on BR cases to 222 size without trouble. I still have some of his rounds.
