Can you see your holes at 300 yards?

I'm using a Sightron 10-50. I can see my .308 holes on the white sighter target but, I cannot see them on the black F target. On string 2, I dropped 7 shots into the 9 ring. I know it was wind change but, not being able to see my shots, I didn't know.

Can you see your shots at 300 yards and if so, what scope are you using?

depends on the day and the scope, I have had days where with my SIII on 50 power I could see out too 500 meters. I have had days where I couldn't see past 300. I will say that my 12-42NXS and NF comps are always a little better than my SIII for seeing though.

Shots in Black at any range are hard to see. We went to blue targets but at 1000 it has to be right to see holes. Matt

I noticed my SIII 10-50x was effected by conditions a bit more then other scopes I have, after adding a Sun shade I feel it is noticeably better..Could it be it lets to much light in? All I know is it helped

When mirage is running it can be tough to see holes at 200 yards. Its all about condtions and having a reasoble optic.

I have Nightforce. Good - yes. The answer - No. It's all about conditions.

Am guessing you are shooting club match and fire 20 rounds without spotting the target. We use the shoot N see targets to cover the 300 yrd target and then peel them off to score the target. Works real well, and you can see each hit.

I've seen holes in the white at 600 on a mirage-heavy sunny day thru a friend's Pentax-something. Using my 6" Meade telescope with the high-mag eyepiece on a calm day I can barely make out holes at 800 yards but not 900, again in the white.

That post about blue vs black answered a question I've had about why blue? Now it makes sense....

This was a great match, well ran, and very tough, imo. You are speaking of the match at Manatee, correct ?

Conditions were good for the first string, and I could see my hits pretty easily with my March X - 80 power scope (dialed to about 65x).

As the match progressed, conditions worsened and by the third string mirage was also an issue along with the swirling winds. Between my spotting scope and March, I could see a limited number of hits.

Seeing the hits on the black target are difficult at 300 yards - making this a terrific challenge.

Do they use a contrasting backer board behind the targets? Our local club matches use the white corrugated presentation board set at angle behind the targets. As long as the sun is up, 6mm holes are very easy to see at 300.

OP,,,,any bullet at any distancenthat gets into the black is very difficult to see,,,at "B"enchrest events there is a small (1 moa) aiming square above the scoring rings out of the way of normal group placement,,,,it was put there bak in the 50's when if you had a 16 power scope you were bragging about it !!!!,,,there has been only one time in 40 years that I had to aim at that square (and it was at 200) because the mirage was so bad that I culdnt see the rings on the target ,,,,normally we try to stay away from that black square area just because you can loose a bullet there ,,,,,,the NRA/military style targets were adopted from the old days of iron sights and qualification in th e Army,,,,most shooters who have shot at targets that are blue in the bull area or just rings only prefer them,,,, Roger

Hi Blair,

Yes, I was there to see you get your medal. Good shooting!

On the 3rd string I compensated and put most shots back were they belonged. It was the second string that caught me off guard.

Did I say great shooting, Blair? ;D

While I have only shot a 300 yd fclass a few times I think there is some problems to be addressed with 300 yd fclass shooting. When we were shooting at perry's midrange last year there were many 200-17,18,19,20x's shot. The problem with this is half way through your string there is nothing left of the xring. There are no lines left so you are left with guessing if its a 10 or x while doing pit duty. I feel this is a disservice to the competitors as the daily aggs were often decided by a couple x's. My solution to that, not sure if its possible, would be to get 300 yd centers with sticky backs. Halfway through the relay or when the lines get obliterated slap the new sticky center on. This wouldn't be possible during the middle of a relay with the regular glue on targets as it would take to much time. You could have the sticky target the size of the 9 ring as there shouldn't be many holes outside that at 300. Also another problem is that the lines on the 300 yd target are a lot thinner than the other distances. Even some of the relays early in the morning other competitors and I had a tough time seeing any lines at all. I was stuck to adjusting my aim off where I thought my spotter was in relation to the dead center. Just a few of my observations with 300 yd fclass.

Ryan, if the wind is "relatively" calm, you can put enough clicks in your scope to be aiming at the NUMBER 9 so you have an unobstructed small "target" to aim at!

No, they did not. I like the idea of the angled white backer.

This particular match will be going to electronic targets next year and stretching the F-Class midrange out to 600 yards.

Only 2 more with this format remain.

Ben,
You are correct. It didn't help out though when the targets were blurry enough you couldn't see lines or anything. It just appeared as a black blob, lol. Thicker lines would have helped a little bit, maybe. Im not sure if it was just that particular range at perry with the direction of the sun hitting us just right in the morning or what but it was very difficult to see where you were aiming. My sighters were always off in no mans land so I could save the little x ring for record shots.

Oh T-Rust me, I know exactly what you are saying! The ONLY real way to get a "new target" up there is to blow the marker out to such an extent that it destroys the target itself! We use 1" markers for 600 yards and orange golf tees for 300 yard markers. The golf tees are perfect for blowing up when you need a new target up there! That's a little trick I figured out! LOL!!
