Can you fire 45-70 Trapdoor loads through a Sharps 1874 rifle?

I've noticed that in addition to the regular load data for 45-70 there is also 45-70 Trapdoor loads. Are those ok to fire through a modern replica of a Sharps 1874?

I ask because a lot of clubs only offer a hundred yards for their rifle range. No sense in beating up your shoulder for that distance.

I agree with djporter on all counts. Answer is yes.
Yes, I have owned and shot a number of originals and never had an issue. Just keep your loads at the level recommended for the trapdoor. Always had the best accuracy with lead bullets and and a lot of fun with black powder loads. Check out the Trapdoor Collector link below, a lot of excellent info. Al is an expert.

Hope this helps,

I shoot them a lot in my sharps 1874, pleasant to shoot. Also shoot black powder cartridge loads they aren't to bad and are more authentic. Love the bigger longer boom and white smoke. You'll be learning about grease cookies soon....HB

Another source for loads is the Layman reloading book at the back under TC pistol loads in 45-70 . They list some light loads if used in your Sharps. One is listed all over the net of 11-12 grains of Unique with 350 - 400 grain bullets very easy on the shoulder. Reduces the pain to zero.. have fun.. HB

I probably won't be using much blackpowder. I have a Hawken 50 cal and as much as I enjoy shooting it, I don't like the constant effort to combat rust and corrosion. The whole hot-soapy-water-in-a-bucket thing gets old.

I have my Springfield trapdoor 45-70 hanging on the wall , Had it since I was a kid , fired it once tied it to a tree with arope tied to the trigger . It fired. I keep it clean and oiled but it's just for show. I'm 74 if I remember right I must have been 10 when my grandfather brought it home from some job he was on.

Black powder is easy on a Sharps with both ends of the barrel open. Just wet brush a few times run a couple clean patches or soaked patches down and dry patch. Oil patch your done. I know the hassle with muzzle loaders a different animal. It's worth it for the report, and black powder is still available unlike smokeless.... HB
