CAN YOU DO THIS AND BE SAFE

I have got a 243 on a Stiller action with a Rem varmint barrel.I am wanting to take the cheap way out by not buying a new barrel. My question is,can this barrel be rechambered to a 6mm dasher and still be safe or do I need to sell this barrel and start over?If I needed a 243,I would keep this barrel and buy a blank for the dasher but already have 3.What is your thoughts on this?
Thank you
Jim

How many rounds through the 243 barrel? is it worth saving a few hundred dollars??? if so then the answer to your question is probably yes it can be done. Smith will cut off the old threads or more needed to rechamber the barrel in 6 Dasher. He will have to dial in the barrel, cut it off, cut tenon and re-thread, then rechamber. From the smiths point of view its Basically like starting all over with a new barrel but its not a new barrel. Just something to think about, your going to be paying the same money to the smith as chambering a new barrel. SO does that $350 you saved on a barrel make sense to you?

The barrel has 75 rounds through it.I was just thinking the shank might be too short to be safe.
Thank you

There is a hoop stress calculation for minimum chamber wall thickness.
But going from 243 to dasher you could get way with only having to set back an inch or less. I would think safety wise its very plausible unless its a unusually thin contour.

Sorry to be picky but traditional hoop stress calculations do not work for barrel chambers. You need to use Lame's equations for thick walled cylinders, or more appropriately in today's world, finite element analysis. --Jerry

There is enough steel available in a rem varmint barrel to cut off the tenon and rechamber in Dasher. I wouldn't try it with a magnum but with a short cartridge like Dasher, you'll have plenty of safety margin.

Edit: Just to be clear, I'm speaking of cutting off the tenon, not cutting off the entire chamber. You'll be setting back only about 1" and you'll be trusting the previous chamber to be accurate to follow for the new chamber.

That said, it sounds like you're considering taking a used barrel and putting $300 worth of gunsmithing into it. It better be a shooter to make this investment. Now if you do your own work, that's a different story. --Jerry
