can you build a 223 action into a 6mmbr?

I'm considering getting a rifle in 6mmbr or possibly converting my 223 bvss into one. I'm having a little trouble finding out what caliber actions are being used. or maybe I just have to buy a custom action for it. can this be done with my 223 action or is it more trouble then its worth? thanks, Nick.

If it's not a Savage, the bolt-face needs to be machined out on most actions. (There are a few with flat faced bolts that don't need this, but they're rare.) In the case of some actions, notably Remington 700s, this machining also removes the extractor housing, so further work is required, machining a longitudinal slot in the side of the bolt body and fitting Sako parts is the usual - and expensive - cure.

An alternative is a bolt-swap for one from another rifle of the same make and model with the correct dimensions, or replacement bolt if available. Obviously, this will depend on how common the action is and whether anybody has a spare bolt, or a scrap action where they'd be willing to sell its bolt off. To get the right bolt for 6BR, it's the very common 0.473" case-head diameter, so anything that starts off chambered for .22-250 Rem, .243 / .308 Win, 6mm / 260 / 7mm-08 Rem, or any of the Mauser cartridges will do.

nice. so aside from getting it rebarreled all I would need would be either the ptng bolt head for 308 or a stock bolt for a savage bvss in 308?

The Savage is easier than that. Buy a pre-fit barrel in 6BR, an action wrench and a nut wrench from Jim Briggs at Northland Shooters Supply and rebarrel it yourself. You will need Go and No-Go gauges for 6BR to set your head space. Buy the new bolt head and go shoot. Your cost will be around $500 for all the pieces.

Be ready to spend more money on bullets . It's the most the fun of all calibers to shoot & very accurate. Shot often

The only hangup is the blind magazine that is for 223. You may be able to modify it. The guys at savageshooters.com would know.

I would most likely just use a single shot follower. I've read 6mmbr can b tricky. besides. my xlr chassis fcp-k is my mag fed bolt action baby. I planning on shooting it a lot.

Only problem with buying a "prefit" barrel is the length of the freeebore. What bullet weight do you want to start off shooting?
If you start off with 50s, as the throat wears you can go heavier, still reach the lands and still have lots of bullet/ case neck contact.
Start off heavy and before too long you'll have bullets just barely sticking in the case neck.
Savage short action for a 6BR? YOU BET!! Got 3 and love every one of them. Remember, it's a Savage. It can be just about anything you want it to be. 8)
Consider a dummy round, loaded with the lightest bullet you plan to shoot, seated to the shoulder neck junction. Have your chamber cut to those specs with the bullet jammed into the lands.
Or, call just about any of the barrel makers, tell them you want your chamber cut the bullet weight of your choice, jammed into the lands. (short throat) They "already know the specs". That's what they're in business for. It'll be your barrel so get it chambered the way "YOU" want it. Plan ahead. 8)

honestly I have no idea what bullet weight I want to use yet
I guess I would like to shoot a mid weight bullet to try and barrel life up and I want to use easily available bullets.

Stick with the mid 60's as alot of guys going to fast twist barrels are always selling their stash off to buy heavy bullets.
