can the .243 / 95 gr SMK be shot out to 1K ?

I'm using my 1-9.25" twist R700 .243 Varmint to take a 1000 yd instructional class and thus far I'm not getting supreme accuracy with 105/107 gr bullets. My best load thus far is the 105 Amax / 42.5 gr of RL22 and I'm at about 1 moa at 200 meters. Acceptable accuracy but I was hoping to try for a little better. I'm thinking the 1-9.25" bbl might like the 95 smk's better. Would like some input on if you think it will be ok to take the 95's out to 1000 yds. Thanks !

I have shot the Sierra 95's out to 1,000 with my 6mm BR. Not the ideal combination but they work fine.

I had very good results with the 95 berger vld hunting or target, they liked a long jump in a savage factory barrel and were quite good a long range.
Good luck

My ruminations that follow are logic, theory and opinion only:
I too would be suspect of that twist rate for the 105 class.
The difference of less retained velocity with the 10% redux in bullet wgt results in longer flight time which hurts any slippage in wind call.
You are battling the two error factors and which one will be secondary is the question.
I would try some loads at 200 and hopefully could pick up at least 3/4 minute which gives you 7" to lay off on the zephyrs.
My 7.5 Krieger yet to be chambered for the 6XC Long Neck was bought for the 108 and above family. I hope I don't need more twist. My Bud has found a nice node around 3200 for the 107s with Palma sr brass with lotsa life - still shooting a handful after some 600 rds. Freebore is on the short side but is compensated for by the long neck, giving up no capacity. Fun game, eh?:)

i have shot 87gr vld out to a thousand have also thought about trying the 95gr vlds and also the sierra 90gr was another i had thought about. i also have a 1/9.25 factory twist savage and the 105s didnt work for me either.

This should answer your questions: http://www.bergerbullets.com/twist-rate-calculator/

Gyroscopic Stability becomes an issue with longer and heavier bullets at your twist rate. My 9.25 twist Savage 243 shoots the 87 Vmax well. I never tried the 105's in the 243, although I shoot them all the time in my 6mm BR with an 8 twist barrel however, it's what your barrel, at your velocity, at your altitude that matters. YMMV.

Remember we argue al the films about the "best " and collectively deem 2nd best as garbage. This is a trap. Why wouldn't a 95 be ok at 1k? As good as a 105? Probly not, but use a calculator and you'll see its probly only inchs of difference. Inchs you get back by increasing your accuracy with the lighter bullet. Unless they don't shoot better then stay heavy. Lol

Berger 95 vld target in my savage 12 lrpv. 243 win.Factory barrel 9.25 I switched to these after shooting 87 vmax for a couple years when I started shooting out to 1k. 95 are a big improvement in accuracy in my rifle and a lot more retained energy to tip over steel at 850 to 1k
