Can Remington mag bolt face be bushed up?

I was wondering if a Remington 7mmMag bolt face could be bushed-up to reliably work with a 30-06 case? I currentyly own a Remington 7mmMag rifle which would suit me fine if I could get the bolt to work with the 30-06 case.

I intend to have my smith do the job, if it's something that is a common enough procedure.

Sure, put in a .472 dia. bushing and a SAKO style extractor.

Purchase an OEM Rem or PT&G bolt w/ Rem extractor.
The SAKO extractor mod isn't the best solution.
A pinned M16 type extractor is atleast captive.

I'll not be going with a modification. I've learned that the sako extractor is a danger under heavy loads, never mind the other modification issues involved.

My problem is that I need a long action bolt in STAINLESS!

Unless you happen to find one in a classified and snatch it up before somebody else grabs it, they just aren't out there. It's amazing to me how 90% of the custom barrels sold are in stainless, but new bolts are sold in anything BUT stainless.

I believe most bolts are not stainless in stainless actions. Maybe not in all applications, but...

My first choice would be to get a PT&G replacement bolt and handle. ge Dan Armstrong to Tig weld it on for you.

Second choice would to remove and bore out former OEM extractor Make a bushing and silver solder in. Then machine for a M-16 style extractor.

The cost will be close either way.

OEM Remington bolts are not stainless-
hence the blued/pinned/silvered nose/lugs & aft end around handle on CrMo actions.
where S/S action bolts are bead blasted on aft end for cosmetics.

Bodies are jewelled starting at bolt head/pin location.
Bodies are jewelled/fluted on 700 Ti bolts.
Bodies are bead blasted/matte blued or parked.


The only piece that is S/S is the cast handle.
C embossed & or C stamp letter on underside of handle=chrome moly
S embossed & or S stamp letter on underside of handle= stainless steel
