Can Rem 700 in 6PPC opened for 6BR

GSPV

A failure to plan is a plan for failure.
I've seen a couple of Remington 700 or similar actioned rifles in 6PPC in the classifieds and am wondering if the bolt could be opened up for the 6BR and perhaps the barrel set back and rechambered.

GSPV, If they are Remington 700's and are chambered for 6PPC, they are either, .222/.223 Bolts that have been opened up to PPC or .308 Bolts that have had the Remington Extractor removed and had a Sako extractor installed. If they are .308 bolt faces I'm sure they can be made to fit the BR. Maybe our resident gunsmiths can give you a little more detail.

If you want a 6BR rifle, why not buy a Rem700 with a 308 boltface and then build on that?

Seems like it would be easier...

I used a Rem 700, with a 308 BF,chambered in 6PPC, in IBS VH class for 2 years without ever having an extraction problem. If the BF has been altered, with a Sako type extractor, it can still be made to function as a BR.

If one has unlimited $, just starting with a custom action is the way to go.

The two 700 based rifles in the classifieds are already trued, have Jewell triggers, are bedded into a benchrest stock, etc. for $800 and $900, respectively. Made me start thinking...

Why not just stick with the 6ppc? You can order preprepped brass from several places. I shot a no-turn 6br last year and for this season I bought a 6ppc. I ordered preprepped brass from Ron Hoehn. Another advantage is the preprepped brass is also weight sorted already.

For the cost of modifying the bolt and rechambering the bbl you can buy a good supply of preprepped brass in 6ppc.

Trying to understand, are you saying that a .473 bolt face will work with a PPC case .445?

JerryO, many times a PPC case will work with a 308 boltface, but not always. Sometimes it takes some modification to make the cases eject flawlessly, there are some setups that are just a PITA.
