Can Norma MRP be substituted for Hodgdon H-1000 in 284 Win?

I am not looking at this as a 1:1 substitution. I'll happily do a load work up. No H-1000 at Powder Valley but they do have MRP, 1# & 8#. I'm shooting a straight 284 Win, Lapua brass, Fed 215 and 175 SMK. Looking at burn rate charts it appears that MRP is somewhat faster than H-1000. Is it too much faster? Or, can I make it work? This is for F-Open so, to me, the higher nodes are more interesting.

I would think H 4831SC would be a little closer. In the Berger manual Max load is listed about 2.5 gains under H1000 with a 180 VLD, Matt

I just saw the portion of your original question and it referred to F-Open competition.. You would NOT want to use RL-22 for that purpose>>>way too dirty. DKHunt's suggestion of H4831 is a MUCH better option...

I think it could be a great choice. H1000 is a slower Burning The case get full before you get near 58000psi H4831 SC looks good at 58000 PSI MRP looks good at 58000 PSI also but MRP is 100 FPS faster at 58000 PSI. These are rough numbers . Larry

Medic,

I'm interested in your success with H-1000. I used to use it in a 243 WIN 600yd/1000yd bench rest gun. I used it then as it was easier on barrels than H-4350.
What kind of velocity do you get with H-1000? Accuracy?

I'm building a new 1000yd gun in straight 284 WIN and have some H4831SC and I also have some H-1000.

Hello Norm.. My 6.5 x 284 will see 1 more 1000 yard competition. Next month it will become a 284 Shehane. My intent right now is to use H1000. I use it in my 6.5 x 284 with GREAT success. I believe I will get a "comfortable" 2925f.p.s. and longer barrel life than H4350. If it will not work, my next stop will be IMR 7828 that I KNOW WILL work.. A friend of mine uses IMR 7828 in his 7mm Walker which is essentially a Shehane with a 40degree shoulder.

For the 284 win, H4831SC is pretty much the standard.
If you want added velocity, get hold of some VV 560.
