Can I shoot f class with this??

Im looking to start shooting f class at ben averys. This is a savage lrp in a choate stock with a lrt leupold. This is the best I can do. This is a 6.5 creedmoor with 140gr eld-m. This load was 41.9gr H4350 jumped .030. It was exactly the same from 41.5-42.3 so I picked the one in the middle which had single digit es/sd. 4 shot group @ 200. Im not looking to set records, or even be competitive for that matter, just want to not get laughed at :/

Well, I certainly would try. I doubt you'll be laughed at, well love all newcomers to the sport. Run what you brung, and practice at ranges as far as you can.

Might help to have ballistic info and calculations for ranges to help get you on paper with first shot.

You will find the F Class community to be some of the nicest most helpful bunch of people you'll come across. No risk of being laughed at no matter what you bring. Beyond that you will be competitive if you shoot like that, very nice group. Welcome to the sport!

I will reiterate what Fredrik said. You will NOT be laughed at. The shooters will help in any way they can AND you should do just fine with that load and accuracy level! Just come out and enjoy!
P.S. There is a 1000 yard match scheduled this Saturday. Be there "about" 6:30A.M.

vmaxpro, look on Desert Sharpshooter's website for practice days and come on out. Ballistics tables for 600, 800, 900 and 1000yds does help, oh and something to lay on DG is not skin friendly

Sounds great! Tommorrow Im running 30 rounds over the chrono. Do people kind of show you the ropes? As in how to pull targets and score, stuff like that.

Yes they do; just mention this is your first time, and become awash with a zillion welcomes, helpers and stories.

Oh also, I shoot off a bald eagle rest from the benches. Should I bring a bipod just for the hell of it? How many rounds should I bring? I usually only load 50 at a time.

Is there a mat you would reccomend? Thanks!

Your gonna love this stuff shooter. Don't break your bank just yet. Get on the line and you will see what you need. I've gave away several mats to new guys cuz I bought ones I didn't want later. I think midway has a new model that was on sale that will last you.

With a 6.5 you would be shooting in F-Open which allows for using front rests such as the bald eagle. There is another discipline called F-TR which allows 223 Remington and 308 Winchester only, and in F-TR you have to use a bipod as opposed to a front rest. Note that when shooting in F-Open, the combined weight of the rifle, scope and any attachments cannot exceed 22 lbs (excluding the front rest) and if shooting F-TR, the weight of the rifle, scope, bipod and any attachments cannot exceed 18.18 lbs.

In terms of the number of rounds you would need it depends on the match format. Several people on here are certain to have detailed knowledge about how things are done specifically at Ben Avery, or can point you to their match programs, but commonly one-day F-Class competitions are shot as three matches of sighters + 20 shots for record for each match. The number of sighters vary per club / match rules and distance shot but a common structure is unlimited sighters in the first match, then two sighters each in the following two matches for mid-range matches (typically 600 yards) and unlimited sighters in each match for long-range (1000 yards). I typically load 75 rounds for a mid-range match and 80 - 85 rounds for long range.

My checklist for going to a match includes (if shooting F-Open):
Rifle
Empty chamber indicator (ECI)
Front rest
Mat
Rear bag
Ammo
Eye and hearing protection
Brimmed hat (for the pits)
Water

I bring a ton of other stuff too (spotting scope, mirage shield, cleaning rod, bug spray, clipboard, pen, timer, chair etc.) but with the above I will be able to shoot the match.

Do you have large feet on your rest? If not, you'll need something to put on the ground to level your rest. Yes you can use a bipod in open class.

By all means take your Savage lpv and shoot. I shot my first "real" match with one chambered in 6br. I told everybody that would listen it was my first match, got some great help and tons of advice. Made several life long friends that day.

Ok great I do have the big feet with extended knobs. Looks like I need to get into the habit of loading 100 rounds or more. Thank you guys for all your help!

I second and third what everyone has said about the f-class community being helpful to anybody that "asks". Usually no secrets held back and all you need to get going is your rifle, ammo, come-ups for the distance you're shooting at, front rest, some type of rear bag and something to lay on... as simple as a piece of carpet. Being everyone is safety conscious, ear and eye protection along with an "empty chamber indicator(ECI). Takes a lot of self induced stress out of the equation if you go and watch a match first. Ask a lot of questions, I think all established shooters love being mentors. You'll be "hooked" first time out.
Have fun!:) Eric in DL

You will love everything about it..........
In Dec. there is a great Match I have made the drive from Oregon for 6 years.
With you 6.5 you will be in F open Class. This is the Big Guys Rifles. Just go have Fun , many will help .
Check around for other equipment you may want to help your shooting.
Hope to see you ?
Don

I am currently shooting Mid range F-open with a Ruger RPR in 6.5 Creedmoor. I made a 3" delrin rider for the fore-end that I can remove for FPR (bipod) matches. I am just getting started in 600yd match shooting and the gear is the least of my impediments at present. I have a dedicated full out F-open rifle in the works but it won't be ready for a few months...which is good because I am not even close to mastering my current rig. You will have a solid gun to start the learning process with and you will likely get hooked.....you are forewarned!;)

You live in shooters heaven. Practically every weekend there is a shoot at Ben Avery or one of the other ranges in the Phoenix area. They shoot a lot of 1,000 at BA but also shoot 3/5/6/8/900 yard matches (not all F class). Just look at the calendar on the Desertsharpshooters.com web site. They will take you by the hand and show you all the ropes. They meet in the butts and if I remember correctly it cost $10 to shoot on the weekend. Lucky, lucky you.

I cant wait! Its tough becuase I run a weekend shift but I can shoot wed/thu. I really want to see and talk to people about a bipod vs a rest. I had a centershot bipod and I really liked it. Looks like the duplin kind of took over that design. My only complaint with the rest is the gun torques pretty bad
