Can I put together a 6mmbr with great accuracy,including optics) for $1800?

Bad economy or not...my company is giving me a bonus. After taxes I'll have ~$1800 to work with. I want a 6br heavy barrel, and good optics.

So the question is... if you had the same budget, what would you build/buy?

Thanks for your suggestions.

Stiller Predator $695
Krieger barrel $255,gunsmith price)
Chamber/fit $175
Rem 700 take-off trigger $30,replace with Jewell when funds allow)
Rem 700 take-off stock,$75 wood, maybe $225 H-S Precision if you have a few bucks to spare)
Talley 1-piece base/ring $45
Sightron SII 6.5-20x42 $415

Do the pillar bedding, wood stock) or skim bedding,H-S) yourself.

Please don't buy HS stock - they support FBI woman killer Lon Horiuchi. HS chose the dollar over ethics and the rights of the people - lets all "help" HS find a new way to make a living.

I'd start with a Rem 700 short action for about $350 - that ought to save a few $$ over a fancy action.

I'd put the money into buying sights. The above list only includes optics - if you want to shoot XTC, you will need iron sights as well.

You are also going to want to glass bed your action. If you don't know how - set aside some money for instructional videos.

Frankly, if you only have $1800, you are going to have to haunt the used market for a while, either on the forums, or on ebay.

I should have added this will be a prairie dog rifle - won't need any sights.

Doing some more research I found I can get the Savage F Class in 6mmbr,1:8) for ~$1100, a refurbished Nikon Monarch 6x24x50 for $500, an EGW 20MOA base for $40, Talley rings for $80.

That puts me at $1720.

Thoughts? Pro/Cons?

I second what Toby said and if you want to shave a cupla 100 off the price get a used Remington 700 action...either way you have a great action and a Keiger bbl..!!!Roger

Pro: fits budget, instant availability,probably)
Con: rough factory barrel, untrued factory action, no less expensive than a custom-barreled custom-actioned rifle that will shoot better, be easier to clean, look better, and be worth more if resold

If you want a Savage call Sharp Shooter Supply and he will put together a Savage with a custom stock, barrel, and a timed and trued target action or a standard action that will shoot as good as a high dollar action.

For a varmint rifle, I would start with a short 700 and avoid the complete blueprinting package. Just lap the lugs and true up the front of the receiver. I would go with a good, heavy surface-ground recoil lug and you can get by with the Remington factory trigger if it is tuned and adjusted properly. Don't overlook Douglas barrels. Air guaged Douglas barrels shoot great and could save you a few bucks. Check Boyd's for a good buy on a stock. Also, I second the previous comments on the Sightron scope. Evolution Gun Works sells very nice one-piece picatinny style bases, get one with 20 minutes of elevaton) for about 40 bucks. Burris insert rings and you're ready to go.

Good luck, I'm sure your rig will shoot quite well.

Buy a new Savage LRPV for $1000 and put a scope of your choice on it and don't look back. Get the 1-8 twist option and invest the money you saved in reloading dies and powder.

If it is a praire dog gun, go www.savageshooters.com in the savage rifles and parts for sale forum and what you want is there right now for $1300. custom built heavy barrel 6mm BR being sold by guy named "PA Hog". you can email him from there.

I would go the Savage route, with a SSS tuned action and prefit shillen barrel from them. Lot of stocks for sale on savage shooters, and buy a scope from the internet.

Does anyone know of a 1 stop shop for the barrel and action? Especially at those prices?

Your gunsmith can order the action and barrel at those prices -- just find a good 'smith, discuss the rifle specs with him, give him a check for action and barrel, and be prepared to wait. It will be worth the wait, if you really like supremely accurate rifles.

While you're waiting you can shop the classified ads for the trigger, stock, and maybe even save a few bucks if you find a good used Sightron or Leupold.

When I was trying to decide wich way to go with my first build "custom" or factory and truing, I went custom and am sooo glad I did! listen to Tobys first reply and you wont regret it. otherwise if you go factory theres always gonna be that little question in the back of your mind could I have a MORE accurate rifle? and then you'll end up going the custom route later. Save yourself some pain and do it right the first time. You'll love it!!
