Can 7X64 brass be made into .280?

I was thinking of buying Lapua brass for my .280.They do not make it. So, can 7X64 brass be run into a .280 die or can it be fire formed into it?

If you mean making the Brenneke version into a standard .280 case, no. The case is somewhat larger than the '06 size case.

I have actual measurement of cases by RWS and other manufacuters but not those made by Lapua and they are .469" while a Federal 270 is .470"

Do not know what is meant by larger. If the base to the shoulder is larger, running it into the .280 die would set it back. If you mean total length, it could be trimmed.

I don't know a whole lot about this type of thing but have looked up OAL of the cartridge brass you mentioned and it looks to me like the 7x64 will still be too short to make 280 brass. Would 270 Winchester brass be long enough? I know Lapua doesn't make 270 brass but RWS does. Might be something to look at.

From Wiki:

The .280 is based on the .30-06 necked down to accept 7 mm (.284in) bullets, with the neck moved forward .050 in (1.27mm). The neck was deliberately moved forward to prevent chambering in a .270 Winchester rifle, as firing a .280 round in a .270 rifle could cause the projectile to get stuck in the barrel or rupture the barrel due to excessive pressure.

30.06 or 270 brass should work.

Howdy !

New Norma 7 X 64 brass I've received mic'd .466" @ the base, and that's the same spec I've read in prints for the case.

The .30-06 and its ilk would be larger in base diam, perhaps by up to .004" ( once fired ).
IMHO - That's too large a disparity in the base diam's, for practical use of 7 X 64 in a .280Rem chamber.

1inbrgd I agree with you 100 percent. But if he has to buy cases why not get 270 and come out right to right oal to begin with. Neither are going to have the right head stamp.

EBB, the 280 Remington and the 270 Winchester are the same length, because of the reloaders infatuation with the case having head space there is no way one of them can carry on a conversation about the length of the case from the datum to the case head.

For case formers the 280 Remington is .051" longer from the shoulder to the case head than the 270 Winchester. And then there is the other length, there is .041" difference in case length between the 280 Remington and the 30/06/270.

My favorite case is the 280 Remington, for reasons? The effort required to get a reloader to understood is not worth 'the effort'.

The original question was can 7x64 be made into .280. I guess the answer is no. Lapua does not make .270. So I guess that would leave me with .30/06.

I'm not sure why you would want to go through the hassle, I ( and a hunting buddy) have been shooting the .280 since '89, Rem brass has been excellent, cheap, plentiful. My load, new Rem cases, simply run through the die, flash holes deburred, length trimmed. 22" Rem mountain rifle, 57.5 IMR 4350, Fed 215, 139 br Hdy spbt, yields 3075 fps @ 15' from the muzzle, shoots UNDER .5 minute, never had any case failures. Best 3 shot group from sandbags on the bench, .10 . First two shots, one hole. Numerous elk/deer killed with one shot out past 300 yds. What more could you ask for ?
