Caliber switch in Remy 700??

I am considering purchasing a used Remington 700 in 7mm Mag. I would like to use the action and rebarrel to 6.5x55. Would I be able to do this and use the existing 7mm mag action. I believe the 7mm case head diameter is 0.531 and the 6.5x55 is 0.4803. This seems close, but I would like to be sure before I purchase the rifle.

I have been looking for a used Remington 700 in 6.5x55 but I have been unable to locate one, therefore the above question.

Thank you

Just have the bolt face shrunk to the proper dimensions. Most gunsmiths can add a ring and silver solder it in. You will have to have a sako extractor installed though. Gre-Tan Rifles can do this for you and have your bolt back in a couple of weeks

A 6.5x55 case will fall out of a 7 RM bolt, they are not that close......
You could also purchase a new bolt from PT&G... or buy a used one off this site when they show up..

i would look for one being sold here on this site .you can find a bolt ready to go for 100.00 - 125.00 .the internal parts firing pin , ejector pin and even the shroud will interchange from your mag bolt .you can then sell that bolt to someone who is looking to go to a magnum. T.R.
