caliber for local sporter class 200yd bench match

The local gun club has a sporter match along with varmint and unlimited 200yd match once a month. I plan on shooting varmint with my Savage 6 br. The match is score, 20 rounds. They do it in 2 10 shot legs along with the others to allow for barrel cooling. My choices are a 1-12 .223 Rem 700 that is up to the task "if/when" the wind isn't blowing. The other is a Rem 788 in .243. It's 10 shots in 10 minutes and shoot for score. I am not shooting my 7mm mag, or my .257 Weatherby, because of barrel heat. I won't be buying another sporter just for this fun match. The .243 is really tempting with some of the 80 grain Fowlers I have buy IDK if the gun would get too hot for good accuracy. Opinions??

Sounds like fun! Heck yeah, I'd use the 243. Long as your rifle is somewhat of a grouper, and you use good bench skills, you should have a ball. jd

Actually have 2 788's in .243, and they are both shooters. Both need a Timney trigger set at 1.5lbs. Barrel heat is my only concern.

A Remington 788 in 243 is 1 rifle I wish I'd never got rid of.
It had a fondness for 95gr ballistic tips.
