caliber change ?

For 6BR just a prefit barrel and possibly some work on the feeding. The 223 would be a barrel plus bolt head plus a new box feed magazine of some sort due to the case being so much thinner.

Essentially every barrel manufacturer make "prefit" Savage barrels.
It's the function of the barrel nut that is the beauty of Savage.
Order your barrel in caliber of choice, get headspace gauges.
Put go gage in chamber, screw barrel on till it touches, screw nut finger tight, open bolt, tighten nut, check with go/no go gages.
Go forth and play!

Barrel pricing can be as expensive, or inexpensive as to your desires and budget.
These days even the lesser expensive manufacturers are quite good.

As Stan says, Douglas is a good manufacturer, without breaking the bank.
No offense to Stan, my prefered is E.R. Shaw as they've given good quality, at a decent price, and are local to me.
Were i to live local to Douglas, they would be my first call.
