Caldwell fire control shooting rest

Has anyone had a chance to use one of these,or saw a review on this rest? They are available but I don't need something else that is maybe not as good as it could be..... Thanks,45/70

For the price there very nice rest they are heavy enough to not move around on the table the bags are worthless we up here by protector are having them make up some leather bags. Setting the 4 set screws to tighten up the head don't seem to be a problem. One major problem i have found was DO NOT PICK IT UP BY THE HANDLE it slips out of the head and will not move in any direction has to be taken apart to put it back together. this is just my opinion.

Just got the Fire Control rest last month and have used it in two matches and at the range.I absolutely love it.Have had no problems.I had to use the adjustment screws to make the head movement a bit stiffer,as it would tend to drift down with a heavy rifle on it.Works perfect now and is so quick to get back on target if rifle moves in the bags. IMHO it's great and I am a happy camper.

I didn't know how bad I needed a joystick rest until I tried one.

I shot my first F-Class Championship with my Caldwell Rock BR-1000. I had trouble reaching the knobs and was wasting alot of time, messing around getting my gun aimed.

Next week at a regional, a shooter was kind enough to lend me his extra rest, A Caldwell Firecontrol Rest. Man this thing was slick, It wasn't set up for F-Class,no legs/feet) so we put it on some plywood. This thing was literally a joy to use. Target comes up, your on it, fire. No messing around.

Then he offered to let me take it home, so It followed me. I payed him $215, although he jokingly kept raising the price every relay I shot with it! lol

Next week I used it on a longrange rockchuck hunt. I had my bench set up on a colonie of chucks, and could pan from one rockchuck to another blasting away. Like a minature gun turrent...

flybuster, aka - tanner furniss - jumped on that rest like a duck on a june bug. what he didn't tell you how good a score he shot with his 6 dasher - 444 ?x. to win the day.

and yes, i kept uping the price. i think i had him up to about a GRAND when he finished - AND HE WAS AGREEING.

i am going to reconfigure the head on the rest as i don't like the 3 lobe bag and want a leather 3' BAG. THE HEAD IS TOO SMALL FOR IT.

the vertical travel is rough - but what the heck, you lock it in position. the head moves a bit better when you dust it with a bit of powdered graphite. further, going to mill a bunch of big hole in base to lighten it up. i don't believe we need 22 ton rests to shoot well. will let you how it works later.

a great value. i retail them for 215.00 plus s&h. [ the shipping is brutal]

Alright, you guys sold me.I just ordered one,I have been window shopping for quite some time now,and couldnt take those giant price tags on some of those rests....Seems like some gouging going on in that industry?

I still carry Fire Control rests for $179.00 plus shipping. Some how our 800# does not work right now. Just been informed. the phone # is 707-468-8834. Since you have to pay for the phone call, frt will be only 5.00 till the 800# is back up and going. This is a special through the month of August.

I had to make some modifications to the front of mine to be able to use a 3" Protektor bag and have it centered on the rest.

I can't tell you it is better then a conventional rest since we have just got into this paper punching thing, but I really do like it.

How is the backlash? When you move to a position with a rifle on the rest, does the point of aim stay in place when you let go of the toggle handle?

I purchased mine from Optic Planet for $169.00 free shipping.
The only issue I have is that it comes with a sporter style bag and the rest will not adjust wide enough, 4 7/8", to fit any of the 3" bags I have. The extra bag they sent is of the "EL Cheapo" design.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a front bag??
Jim

It appears if you want to use a standard 3" bag, your going to have to modify the rest. Other than that, your stuck using the 3 lobe bags for benchrest stocks. You can have Protecktor make you up nicer version of the 3lobe, but it's still what it is.

I just use the original 3 lobe on my 3" stock. It dosn't seem to affect my shooting for better or worse, that I can tell.

I got one a month back or so. I've only been able to shoot with it once, but my impression is that it's very serviceable, although weird looking. I took the clamping bits off the top and applied some Velcro, so I am able to use the same bags I was using with my Bald Eagle windage top, just without the side clamps. I thought I'd try the 3 lobe bag that came with the FC rest, which I didn't mind at all, actually. The day I spent at the range yielded some of the best groups I'd shot with the three different rifles I was testing that day. I am not a competitive benchrest shooter, but purchased it with the idea of using it with a rotating bench in the varmint fields. I am looking forward to giving it a try.

Hippy...I will take pics of the modifications I needed to make in order to use a Protektor 3" bag. Hopfully I,my wife) can figure out how to get the pics to this site.
