Caldwell fire control rifle rest ( front rest only )

I purchase a Caldwell fire control rifle rest.Couldn't afford the Neo rest.So got what I could afford.Going to us it for benchrest shooting. With a variety of rifles. From benchrest Savage 308,HRM12,Savage BVSS 223,Savage 338 Lapua etc. Want to here your opinion on the rest I purchase.Thank you for your input.

I used one for a while when I started as have others I know and it’s a perfectly capable rest especially for the cost. Shoot with confidence and upgrade when the time is right.

If you’re asking for critical complaints, my biggest complaint was the slightly jerky movement (which can be fixed if you take it apart and clean it up a bit) and the knob that holds the vertical needs to be cranked down pretty hard to prevent slippage with heavier guns.

My experience is exactly the same as John. I hope that you found a good deal on a used one. There are a lot of them out there, no longer being used.

I looked at the Caldwell when it first came out. As I recall, and I may be wrong, the top wouldn’t accommodate an Edgewood or Protektor front bag. Considering the cost to modify the top, I opted for the Shadetree instead and mounted it on my base.

I have the full lenth one, I took the back end off because it dont work well with cheek rests. I use the rabbit ears in the rear now. I realy like it!

Great rest to start out with. Alot of folks have fabricated a larger base for more stability. The Seb mini is a great rest at a lower cost than a NEO if you want to step up at a later time.

the fire control will get you by until you can find a farley or a seb. there are probably still more farleys on the line than all the others put together.

the shade tree is a step up, for sure. butch is a great guy. he comes up to our matches in arkansas.

an old tripod bottom is not too hard to find to put the shadetree on.
another rest is the old bald eagle. the originals are the best.

if you buy a new bald eagle with the windage adjustment it is very poor with a lot of back lash. there is a cheap fix [you tube] where you remove the cable and just adjust on the windage base. it works.

i bought a Caldwell to start out with and soon put a Sinclair windage top on the tripod. i filled the tripod legs with shot and it worked for 5 years till i got a farley. i still use it in the varmint field.

the thing to remember is the joystick was invented for one reason only- to get 5 shots on target in the shortest possible time. this is not for everybody. the old rests with out the joystick are still used by many top shooters that dont shoot fast.

the old saying is "you can shoot a real big group real fast" so you better be able to put on the brakes!

Any Caldwell product I have seen is Made in China. I know we all have freedom to choose as a consumer. Do what you can live with.
