bye bye 22-250 hello.308

first off, thank you all. I read all the replys i get and take thim all in to consideration. Im going to take my savage model 12
in a 22-250 and go the hole 9 yards in hopes of a .308 1000yard rifle!
barrel?
stock?
triger?
i need to know what twist will work the best for most loads
a good stock and a very nice triger.
Thank you

I am going to ask you a serious question, do you believe that either a 22-250 or .308 Win is going to be a prime 1000 yard target gun? Especially in a Savage Model. The only action re-done and worked on is a Remington Model 700, not too mention that a 22-250 and .308 Win is ballistically insufficient compared to a 6mm BR, or a 22 Dasher, or hell the target gun I use, .220 Swift/.243 Win. If you are going to spend money on a target gun, you might as well do it right, and all I'm saying is that for a 1000 yard gun, a 6mmBR or 22 Dasher, or some kind of short mag is the only way to go. I'm sorry but there isn't much you can do to a Savage rifle, and there really isn't much you can do with a 22-250 or .308 at 1000 yards. That's just my 2 cents worth.

Ryan

2006 1000yard champ Regan Green did it with a 308, so go im him and take your negativity with you thats not what i asked.
thank you though

By all means do not discount the Savage action or the .308.

Both won many, many thousand yard matches.

The Savage action to some is far superior the the 700. You can change the bolt face and barrel in the backseat of a car.

You can buy great factory ammo for the .308 if you are in a pinch.

PM me if you want some pictures of my Larry Racine Palma Gun, It a great 1000 yard gun that was only a little over $2000. You get a lot of gun for you money with a Savage.

Hey Chuck...

I think "Bench4fun" has spent too much time in one narrow shooting discipline.

Hey Bench4fun... ever hear of "Palma". The gun MUST be a 308, target is 1,000yds... and they shoot little itty bitty groups in little itty bitty x-rings!

biglonnie204... the 308 is a great choice - first of all, barrel life will be forever - it'll give you a lot of time to learn 1,000 yd shooting and will be very forgiving of your mistakes, both in loading and shooting. The throat will take forever to burn out.

The 308 is a pussy cat to load, case life will be long,I have 308 cases that have been loaded 28 times, and I have NEVER lost a 308 case to splits or head separations)... and with a 10" twist, it will shoot just about any 1,000 yd bullet.

Good 1,000 yd bullets are the 155 Lapua Scenar, and the 175 Sierra SMK. Both will shoot better in a 10" twist. Some guys are shooting Bergers.

As to the Savage action. There is a group of "special shooters" that believe that if you don't use a custom built action, then you shouldn't even show up at a shooting range - HA! on them... the Savage will build a rifle that is better than you can shoot, and better than most of those "special people" can shoot).

Enjoy, and look forwards to your project - don't let the "special shooters" wizz on your parade!

I have to agree with Catshooter on the Savage. I used to be a Rem 700 fan and still own a couple but when savage brought about the Accu-trigger I decided to try it out. I was amazed at the accuracy. Don't get me wrong I have shot good groups with the 700 but as far back as I can remember and can find old targets to compare, I think the Savage is more accurate. Last Friday I shot 3 - 5 shot groups back to back with my Savage LRPV 22-250 that averaged .317 at 200 yds. and I have not ever done that with any 700. Just my opinion. Bill

i used a trigger from fred moreo and i got a shilen barrel.would get the same again probobly. for the stock i got a choate, harder to get set up than a regular stock with a comb, will try something else eventually. i shot a .355 5shot group at 100yds and a 2.5 3shot group at 600yds. the savage rifles shoot good, barrels are easy to swap. cheap and fun and accurate and american made. i have been having alot of fun with mine. cliffe

Guys I would not worry about Bench4fun's comments to much. It sounds like he does not have very much experience to base them on. Look at is post in tools and equipment asking about how to spend as much as $50000 to get a remington to shoot well. It has been my experience that Savage makes some rifles that shoot really well right from the factory and they shoot even better when you order a custom barrel and screw it on yourself. It is a great way to get into shooting 1000 yards. Use the money you save on the gun and buy more rounds so that you can get more practice. Then once you get the hang of it spend the money on a full custom gun.

I didn't worry... I giggled ;)

I read some of his other posts ;) ;) ;)

.

Its true the 308 may drift a little more and drop a bit,but the numbers dont lie. There are still more comps won by the 308 than anything else.

"I think you guys missed the posters real question. He mentioned Reagan Green as his 1,000 yard shooter and unless he has multiple disciplines under his belt he holds 8 of the 16 1,000 NBRSA Benchrest records. He may also shoot Palma or F-Class?"

i think all most all of you missed the bus on this one ha ha.
the reagn green thing was a snap at binch4fun, a quick refrains that i phoned, sorry.
I'm still looking for info on a good barrel trigger and stock it WILL be a .308 with a savage action

Well, the general consensus around my neck of the woods seems to be cut rifled barrels from Rock and Krieger.

But in my experience just about any high quality barrel will do be it Hart, L-W, Douglas, Shilen, Lilja, Pac-Nor etc. And I've used all the above listed barrels over the years and a few more you can't get any more like A&M. Just keep in mind nothing will screw up a good barrel more than a lousy chambering and threading job. Getting the barrel chambered and threaded in not where you want to be shopping on price.

Hey folks, while were on this subject I'd like to ask a related question::rolleyes:Is it realistic that I could,,1) purchase a savage action,I see these on savages web. They say ".223 bolt head"I dont know what I'd have to do to it to make it work for .308 ..thats one part of my question! And,2) a Manners stock already inletted for the action and barrel configuration given the taper size etc.,do they come like this?Thats another question.,And,3)order a barrel already chambered threaded etc .I read what Couplar stated that you could just screw on an aftermarket barrel....Could I Get these parts, bed it, and is that right?
Could I do this Myself,or do I have to go to a smith .YOUR PATIENCE IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!

If you are buying a new action to start a project with... its probably simpler to just buy one with the correct bolt face to begin with; .223 Rem and family use a .378" bolt face, .308 Win and family use a .473" bolt face. If you happen to come across a screamer of a deal on an action with a bolt head size other than what you want... changing it out is fairly simple: disassemble the bolt, that big screw at the back of the bolt - 1/4" allen head now, flat slot on older ones), pull out the pieces and the bolt head comes right off. Swap out for the new one, and re-assemble. First time thru, there may be some fumble factor. Once you know what you're doing, it takes under five minutes.

As for whether Manners offers a stock ready to go for your particular action/trigger set up... I couldn't say. I've heard lots of good things about Manner stocks, but I don't know about the availability of Savage models.

Changing barrels... this is the great beauty of the Savage system - it makes life easy for DIY/ home gunsmiths and/or hobbyists who want a switch barrel system. Once you have the proper spanner wrench, available from Midway USA) and a suitable vise w/ blocks for the barrel, you can pop loose the factory barrel and screw on a new one fairly simply. There are ways to do change out barrels with the scope still on or the action still in the stock... I'd suggest stick with taking it out of the stock and using QD scope mounts for a while until you are really comfortable with how things work. Basically, you screw the barrel nut on the barrel, all the way forward, then screw the barrel into the action. Insert a case gauge,Brownell's sells Forster Go/No-Go gauges for a variety of calibers, or you can use a fired case if you're willing to be *gentle* and not bang it around), screw the barrel down to where it stops with light hand pressure, then screw the barrel nut down against the recoil lug, and snug it up. It does *NOT* need to be super tight - it ain't going anywhere, trust me. Eject the Go gage, insert a No-Go gage... the bolt handle should not drop with the NO-GO in place. If so, eject the gage, put the barreled action back in the stock, put the scope on, and go to the range.

I'M LEARNIN,Man thanks Milinuk. The reason I asked about the bolt was,if you go to savages website and click on to the actions it states ".223 bolt head"?I think I'll call and inquire about it.The reason I asked the stock question is I'm a newby, and I didn't know if they could be ordered with the barrel cutout.otherwise, I guess you would have to jig the thing up,and machine it out with some sort of mill????????wich I dont own. I would get some gratification from at least maybe being able to assemble /bed the rifle myself. If it was accurate it would be rewarding! One of my thoughts was about controlling headspace with an aftermarket barrel and you feilded it well .I understand finally,Thank you again sir!

Boogershooter--
If you are referring to the Savage "Target" action, it is available in either the small bolt face,.378") or the large bolt face,.473"). You also have options with the bolt handle/ejection port configuration.
