Buying a trued Remington 700

How can you tell if its been trued. Can a gunsmith take the barrel off and tell? I see trued actions all the time but how do you really know. I am having my doubts about one I purchased will not say who but the factory recoil lug was ground on and there were jaw marks on the "Krieger" barrel. If someone goes through the trouble of having an action trued and a custom barrel installed do some of you use the factory recoil lug. I am going to keep the setup but just asking how you can tell you aren't getting a standard action that has only been faced and called trued.

With the barrel in place you only have two features to verify if any work has been done. The face of the bolt will show a light clean up cut of .001-.003 from it's center out to the ejector. Generally, most smiths will not re blue, it will be in the white. Also the same look will be on the back of the bolt lugs. Some full out true jobs involve sleeving the bolt body.

Use of the factory lug is common, but most prefer to go with a precision custom made lug.

Jaw marks on a Kreiger!!???....for shame.

the "trued" actions I have encountered and had done were "polished bolt lugs, polished recoil lugs and never showed jaw marks on anything," sounds suspicious to me - not a pro job.

bbl threads trued but you can not look at them etc. face of bolt turned, true, etc visible.

Yes sometimes they will surface grind the lug,and it should be straight grinding marks not swirls. The barrel shouldn't have vise marks on it for any reason. To see if it was really trued you could unscrew the barrel and see if there is any bluing left in the thread from new. Usually if they recut the threads they are bright and shiny. But if you really want it checked you would have to have it disassembled and set back up in a lathe to indicate the face of the receiver and the bolt abutments to see if they are both on the same plane. Does the bolt look like it was sleeved or stock? Who was the gunsmith? How does it shoot with all that you found wrong in your mind?

Sounds like somebody was trying to reduce the headspace. Grind the lug and a pipe wrench on the barrel. Perhaps they bought a used barrel and were trying to make it work without a lathe. JMHO

Custom actions don't guarantee that it's "right", but the chances of it being right are higher.

To verify if action has been blueprinted, measure barrel threads with a thread mic or over wires. The thread diameter should be bigger than 1.062", in which case, the recoil lug hole should also be bigger than 1.063".

I traded a Sightron SIII 8x32x56 for it.......the guy offered to trade back he's only right up the road maybe 3 hour drive tops. I have to prove that the action wasn't trued before hell trade back.....Kinda sketchy since he's the one that sold it as trued. He offered to true it up and give it back but I don't trust that now. You think he would be 100% sure if it was trued or not he said he has 30 years experience as a machinist so he's a super guru at this point. Ill be out money now from taking it to my smith but if it gets my scope back then so be it.

If he is a true machiniest why don't you take it up to him and have him take off the barrel and check it out while you are there.

If he is a true shooter and trustworthy person he will realize that you are not comfortable with your trade and trade back,,,,unless he has allready sold the scope for more than he could have gotten out of the cobbled up rifle,,,,Roger

He said for me to take it to a smith for inspection. He now doesn't know for sure if it was trued or not. The guy that did the work is dead so I cant ask him.

There is an awful lot of judgment being passed on your rifle by folks that haven't seen it or so much as a picture. have you shot the rifle? If you have doubts, have a knowledgeable smith look at it. If it shoots well and is not too hard to look at, you got a good deal trued or not. A badly trued action is worth less than a stock one.

The gentleman I got it from said if I take it to a known local smith to have it looked at then he would swap back....I took it to my smith paid extra to have it done by tomorrow and I get an email tonight with him changing his mind saying he now remembers for sure the dead guy blueprinted the action that the local smiths word will not be good enough. Lesson learned.

And Roeder I didn't post the sellers name on here so theres no reason to cry foul I have no reason to seek sympathy from you or no one else brother. I sent pics to the seller and didn't get much back other that im stuck with it.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO it only cost me 150.00 to learn my lesson.....I called the guy and asked why he changed his mind and I'm out the money for my smith.....I have to drive 6 hours but at least I wont own this POS.....Erik your words of wisdom run deep in the cold lakes of Porkchop mountain....I have no clue what that means im just happy
