Buying a Scope (Confused)

Having a 6.5 creedmore being built and really confused as to what scope to get and what cross hairs to buy I have never used any other than duplex cross hairs I belong to a range that has up too 1000 yards I want a simple scope that I can shoot at various ranges maybe too 600 yards not any sort of competition It's really confusing all the different types they have Thanks

For target shooting I like a dot or fine cross hair. I don't like a lot of clutter in a target scope. I don't like clutter in my hunting scopes either, I prefer to click with the turrets instead of holding. Matt

I have used a Weaver T36 (approx $400)for years in competition at ranges up to 1000 yards and love it. I like the target dot in the center that allows me to effectively hold for varying wind drift. The trend now seems to be to get a scope with up to 60+ (and I just got a Vortex 15-60 with the ECR-1 reticle, IT COST $1350) but I am not so sure this will actually help my on-target performance.

What's your price range? Also what exactly do you want out of the scope? Do you want to be able to use the reticle for holds or just as a center crosshairs? What do you plan on shooting as far as target and target size?

What's the specs of your Creedmoor?

6.5 Creedmore Savage action Accutrigger 27" SS Brux 1-8 twist Haven't decided on rings and bases yet My top of the line price is under $1000.00 that I have saved for Too many irons in the fire to spend $2600.00 for a night force As said at 80 competition is the last thing on my mind It's just going to be a fun gun not even for Hunting My extent of long range shooting was Deer Hunting maybe to 300 yards occasionally a rare shot at 500 yards but just estimated the hold over. From several I have talked to have said get a mil dot. Have had quite a few tell me to get a Gen II Vortec I like the LR/LRV DUPLEX any comment on this type

The Nightforce SHV, Trijicon Accupower and Sightron SII Big Sky are some options. PIck your poison on reticles but Kentucky holdovers aren't in my playbook shooting at anything. Use a ballistic or MOA reticle or twist turrets.

I recently bought a new in the box Nightforce SHV F1 for just over a $1000 from an individual. FFP scope with good tracking. Has very good glass for this price range. The other choice I'd make is Vortex PST. The Gen I is to be found for your price range pretty easy. Gen II will be there too but are hard to find right now.

For under 1k the Sightron SIII line are good. I have two, the 6-24x56 and 8-32x56. I prefer the MOA reticle, if you get the non-illuminated versions they are under 1k; they do offer a variety of different reticles. You can read about them on the sightron web site (their MSRP is higher than what you buy them for in the real world. ~ $879 for the 6-24 and $929 for 8-32).

Buying scopes is like going to eat out .
Do you want a hotdog or a steak . What is your budget . Do you have intentions to use it on another gun . Shooting 400 yard you could use a a hunting scope . My advice is go to the range and ask what others are using and look through others and make your own choice . Good luck Larry

I think it matters what you are shooting at. Are you shooting at large targets and need to be able to see the rings or are you shooting at steel plates made up of different shapes and sizes?

For shooting steel I like moa style reticles, something like the Vortex EBR04 or the Sightron MOA-2. Most companies have a reticle similar to these two examples.

When zeroing in you can see exactly how many minutes your miss is, allowing you to adjust your turrets as needed. Once I have the elevation dialed in, I'll use the substensions (hash marks) on the windage line for my wind calls.

Just for a night coyote hunt, I swapped scopes on my 20 Practical. Took off the Leupold 6-20 target with a small dot and mounted a Trijicon 2-10x56 with the green triangle reticle. Took it to the range, dialed it in and was able to break clay birds at 500 meters on 10x. If you have a decent pair of eyeballs, you don't need a 42x scope to hit a 12" gong at 1000. You need a good rifle. YMMV :)

It all depends on what/how you intend to shoot. If you shoot from a single defined position, such as bench or Fclass, then check out the appropriate discussions to understand those features (sfp, high mag, simple reticle). If shooting steel in a more tactical fashion, ie various positions, targets, etc you will be better served with a ffp, mil division reticle, and moderate 6-25 mag range; this will also serve well for hunting.

I do not intend to enter any sort of competition I really wanted to know what would be the best scope for some one who wants to shoot at various ranges to get the best groups not having the rifle done to hunt with either I think I have settled on a Sightron or Leupold Thanks everyone for all the input Lou

I would put a 3-15x44 SWFA, you can't it in FFP or SFP for about half of your max price. It is way better glass than the vortex viper line and built better. Any of their fixed powers would also work for even less money. Or watch the sales and get their 5-20x50mm HD non illuminated, excellent glass and tracks great, built like a tank. It only comes in FFP though. Here is a used one for sale with rings and caps and level a through lever.

Save another $200-$300 and pick up a used NF NSX. They come up in the $1250-$1350 range for the older models. Great, reliable glass and if you ever decide to sell it you'll get pretty much all you money back.

Sig Sauer Tango 6 3-18, HD glass, well thought out features and as far as I'm concerned way under value in the used Market

I'd go with sightron, 8-32 Siii can be had for under 1k, I like the MOA 2 reticle. You have lots of options used NF, etc.

If your going to hunt with the rifle I'd advise staying away from scopes that dont offer you the ability to dial down to 3-4x, 6x at the most. Short range shots, quick shots, moving shots are tough when you have scope that starts at 8-10x. 4-14, 3-10 variables and the such offer are a better way to go IMO.. if it was strictly a rifle to paper punch or bang steel and your shooting off a bench with all the time in the world, in a familiar position, higher power ranges make sense and are fun. As far as which scope, we'll we are spoiled with the choices offered today. Some of my favorites are Trijicon accupoints, Leupold mark4s, Sightron SIIIs, SWFAs, Steiner SG3 are good options under a 1000.00. Reticle choices, again, it's sensory over load with the options. Personally I like a simple reticle with some hash marks on the lower vertical for reference or a dialed turret. I buy most of mine used or look for deep discounts new. Quality used optics hold their value and you lose little coin if any.
