buttstock finish coat?

I just "antiqued" my old Rossi stock and I might want to put a top layer on it so the stain doesn't fade. I tried the Birchwood Casey kit and didn't like it; "Tru-oil" is nothing but glossy polyurethane. The Stock Sheen and Conditioner product takes the stain off unless it's used after multiple coats of Tru-oil. I just want a natural matte finish like I have now but it will need some kind of hardening oil or wax I think to protect the stain. What do you recommend? Boiled Linseed maybe?

I’ve had good luck with TruOil by applying several coats and let it dry throughly and then buff with 000 steel wool to remove the gloss and get the finish you’re looking for. TruOil is a mixture of varnish and boiled linseed oil.

Don’t be afraid to oil it and knock it back with steel wool, or something I just got familiarized with—2F and 4Fpumice powder.
