Butches Bore Shine

I dont know if i should bepart of another thread but whatever...

What is up with the lack of bore snake usage??? I find mine to be great, i just bough another .30 caliber one yesturday. Do they lack something that a rod and patch have? Or do something undesirable that the rod doesnt?

I have bee using the snakes ever sence my roommate sat on my rod two years ago. It seems to do everything i need them to do very quickly. I find they excel with the use of the foaming cleaner. Open bolt--> foam barrel, wait 20 mins.--> run the snake through 3-5 times--> oil and store. I could be missing something though so i was just wondering.

Bore Snakes get embedded with grit, solvents, and compounds formed from the solvents interaction with carbon, copper and burned powder. No way to clean them as clean as a fresh cotton patch. Also the color exhibited by a white patch pushed through the bore can be an indicator of what fouling remains in the bore. Lastly, you can tell a lot about the bore's condition with a properly sized patch/jag combination. Where's the savings? You need a specific snake for each caliber.

I have nothing against Boresnakes. I use one in my .22LR all the time. I don't have an issue with what is on them going down the barrel, as the same stuff goes down the barrel with every shot -- but much faster.

Centerfires are a bit different. They tend to copper foul. My preference is to remove copper with ammonia. The Boresnake has a bronze brush and is going to react with the ammonia. Also, how do you know when the copper has been removed? With white patches they no longer come out blue in color.

So the question with them remains to me. Can they do the job, and if so when are they done?

That is why they work so well with the foaming cleaner. Instead of a white patch to tell the color you have the white foam that comes out different colors. If i have a heavily fouled bore after 10 mins the foam changes color and... umm, unfoams or condenses a little and runs out of the barrel some. I will just fill the barrel with new foam, pushing the old foam out, just do that untill your foam stays white.

A week ago this past Sun. I took my 6br (Broughton 5c barrel) and shot in a F class match. Threw the whole weekend I shot 160rnds and never touched the barrel with any kind of patch or solvent. It was hammering and I wasn't going to disrupt anything by cleaning it, unless accuracy fell off. It never did! This barrel was broke in more less in the first two shots fired down the tube! Haven't seen a sign off copper since. All fouling is carbon and powder residue. I do confirm all this with a Hawkeye bore scope not just by the color of my patches. (yes it's hard for me to believe myself) Getting home Sun. afternoon I done my usual, 5 wet patches, 5 passes with a wet broze brush, and 5 more wet patches (all with butches) Barrel was clean! Again I confirmed all this with my borescope! I love BBS and I love my Broughton Barrels!!!!!

ive always used BBS myself and have no complaints other than odor, but once i tried proshots copper solvent i kinda forgot about the good ole BBS. pro shot removes copper faster and and has no odor. give it a try for yourself!!!

Larry,
I have always been a fan of the aggressive copper removers like Sweets,Barns, And Shooters choice. But my thoughts have started to change as of lately on complete copper removal. I have recently been using BBS it is not nearly as aggressive as the others, it will remove it all if you scrub long enough, but I have only been cleaning until I get all the powder and carbon out and some copper but not all of it,I don;t seem to be having fliers on my foul shots anymore and accuracy hasn't degraded any. Before I put them away for the season I will take them to the bone but otherwise I plan on using BBS for the time being.hope this helps.
Wayne.

A big +1 to fastnflat1...this proshot stuff is VERY good. I recently bought another RRA ar15 that had never seen a brush or jag in its life. I first patched and brushed with BBS until patches came out white, cleaned and dried with alcohol, then ran a patch of proshot through it. First patch had a little hint of blue, i thought HUH. Second patch was solid UK blue!!! About 4 patches later it was copper-free. I was really surprised at how it cut, especially with the unoffensive-almost pleasant smell...

I challenged a friend to do this test,,,,,first clean with the old trusted BBS, then with proshot...He had the same results!!! Good stuff!!!

Ive also tried the Hoppe's Elite, yes it is absolutely odorless.....and useless!!!!

well you guys have convinced me to try this proshot copper remover. I have been using BBS for the last 8 years, and I feel like I end up scrubing like a crazy man to get the copper out, and for the last bit I wondered if the stuff was doing much at all. I have all factory tubes now, and I don't think I ever get all the copper out unless I use the jb paste, which is another pain. I looked at pro shot the other day and didn't get it, now I will.

Yeah, I think I will also add the Pro-Shot to my cabinet for trial. And Deadlyswift I have to agree with you on the Broughton's, I have two and love em. Thanks, Larry.

Larry I do think that my Broughton cleans so easly do to it being a high quality hand lap barrel. My factory barrels I will say Even with butch's it still takes a lot of work to get the copper fouling out. After seeing what I see in a factory bore. (reamer marks) I'm pretty much done with factory barrels at this point!! I do believe this is the reason for factory barrels holding as much fouling as they do. Although some factory barrels will shoot well they will never do what a custom barrel will! To be honest tho it really isn't fair to even try to compare the two, but important to understand the difference between the two!
