Burris XTR ring insert question

Currently my inserts are set up as +10 for the front top and -10 front bottom and -5 rear top and +5 rear bottom. With this setup I only have 5 clicks of bottom travel. I need to bring my POI down by about 3 inches. So, if I keep my inserts in same position but just revers the +/- will that give me 5 MOA, so basically about 18 clicks?

Thank you

should work swap the 2 fronts or the 2 back inserts, all your doing is moving the scope impact up and down
I don't understand. You said "two fronts or the two back". I don't do both? If I do the front only what is my MOA change? If I do the back only what is my MOA change?

I use these rings for my rifels.

Keep in mind that the two bottom halves are what determines what elevation you're getting from them . . . not the upper halves.

if your shooting low you need to lower the impact by changing inserts, you can add to the back or remove from the front, if your scope has 40 moa set the scope at 20 midpoint then use inserts to set your impact for center, best to use 0 inserts to start and go from there, I think

You don't say what value your "clicks" are, so its difficult to tell you how many clicks each adjustment will give.

I try to set them up so there is less than one revolution of the elevation turret "down" remaining so it works as a poor man's Zero Stop on scopes that don't have one.

Decrease the bottom rear to -0- and do nothing to the front.

Sorry I am still confused.

So If I need to lower my POI by about 3" do I:

A: Keep the front as is swap the back +5/-5 orientation?

B: Keep the back and swap the front +10/-10 orientation?

C: both A & B

My scope is Burris XTR III (mil-mil)

If you do as I suggest, you'll lower your POI by 5 MOA (minimum). There's nothing you can do to only get 3" at 100 yds. unless you start twisting both front and back with smaller halves on top. That get's complicated and tedious.

Thank you.

I didn't mean for it to lower exactly 3". I was just sharing what my POI is.

At present the scope is pointing downwards compared to the rifle barrel.
You need to raise the front of the scope (and/or lower the rear) so that the scope nows looks where the barrel is pointing.
So, easy first step is leave inserts as you have them...except reverse their up/down order.
The top insert of each ring should be slid around to the bottom of the ring, and the bottom insert to the top.
That will give you a better starting point.
Always match number + and number - . Burris do not recommend using different sizes on each ring.
So a +.010 always with a -.010, etc, etc.
A '0' set at the rear will also help to get the scope's bum downwards.
Try that and shoot it. Change inserts to +.020 at the front bottom and - .020 at front top if current inserts don't get you where you need to be (and, of course you may need to go with a bigger - insert at rear ring bottom with matching + insert on the top).
Some folks get confussled with the inserts and work them the wrong way round.
What you need to do is make your scope look at where the barrel is actually shooting to.
In your case, you are not adjusting the bullet hole downwards. You are adjusting the scope picture upwards.

I'm a big fan of the Burris XTR signature rings and I have several pairs in use.
One important aspect in planning and figuring things is the distance between the rings when in use. That has a huge bearing on the resulting cant. To try to keep things simple for me, I make sure my rings are set at a 4.75 inch spread, so the numbers actually match the resulting slope.

So many wrong answers!. The -10 on the front tilts the scope down approx 10 mins. The +5 on the rear bottoms adds another approx 5 moa downward tilt. Front and back produce opposite effects. Replace the 5's with a set of 0's. That will reduce the tilt by approx 5 moa. About as close as you can get.
