Burris 8x40 or Athlon 10x40

I am considering these scopes.
I would appreciate your thoughts and experiences with them.
If you have had both of them, I really want to hear your thoughts.
I will be shooting short BR mostly.
Clarity matters.
Thanks, and Merry Christmas

I have the gen. 1 Athlon 10-40
It's a really nice scope. Ok for backyard squirrel hunting, for me.
Not a really serious BR scope, in my opinion.
Look at the Sightron ED 45x for short BR. Good glass, clear.

I have no experience With Athlon but do own the Burris 8-40
F-Class which I used for about one season for 100 to 300 yard
UBR type match's. The bracket dot was very useful, and felt like
there was enough power for those small center dots. Eye box
on the Burris is large and comparable with the Vortex GE. Scope
is currently on a 850 to 1000 yard steel VBR Ridgway gun. I'm
selling off the Vortex and keeping the Burris.

I've had issues with Burris's "forever warranty" on 2 separate scopes.....When they worked I liked them a lot, when they didn't ... They didn't stand behind them.... I still have a couple that are 30-35 years old and still working great, But I will not buy another based on their past warranty issues.

I want a variable to give me options for other things besides BR.
Thanks all .

I think the Athlon 10-40x is a very fine starter benchrest scope. Although I have a pricier Sightron 45X as well as a Delta Stryker 5-50x, I've managed scores of 250 for both the IBS and IR50 targets off the bench with just the Athlon, so it's certainly capable in a benchrest context.

Same experience here as Fuj. I bought this last year in late spring. This summer I plan to actually shoot it more and will give some additional feedback. If the weather gives me a nice day soon, I will get out to the range sooner. I have it on a Remington in 30BR set up for SR 100 & 200 UBR in the modified class. So far I like it. At the price point, I feel it is a lot of scope. Is it as clear as my NF Benchrest no, but I didn't expect it to be. With Kelby (old style) 34mm two screw 3/8" rings it weighs in around 39 ounces without the sunshade. About the same as the NF with Harrells offset rings in weight. I do not have any experience with Athlon so I cannot comment on them. I have compared it to my Sightron SII BRD and it is clearer and but it has a bigger objective and 34mm tube. I like the crosshair as Fuj stated above. It is not too busy and has 1/8" dot. So far all the adjustments are repeatable and tracks like it should.

Edit, FYSA it is made in the Philippines.

More to follow.

Sightron makes a fine scope. Just got two back from them (great service and quick turnaround from Sightron) that I had sent in for a check up, a 36X SII BRD that is at least 10 years old and has been on everything from a 22LR up through a 300 Win Mag. The second is an even older SII 6.5-20 x 42mm. It has seen the same type of use and is clear as the day I bought it, it has been out of production for quite some time and I wish I had a second one. Both are 1/8" adjustments with fine crosshair and 1/8" dot. I have been eyeing one of the Sightron 45X fixed power scopes for use when weight may be an issue.

I also like the Sightron SIII 8-32
Great scope, clear and bright. And won't break the bank.
Not sure what your price point is.
Great customer service too.

My only problem with the 32 power's is needing more power. I shot
a good many years with 30 power Bushnells, And in the grand scheme
of things, I wanted more, and most of us do.

Sure we all find we need more power as the distance increases..heck even when it doesn't.
and I did get more as in the SVSSED and a March 10-50x56 ,
Problem is im still looking for more..lol
When I was at Euro Optic, they had a March 80 power for the same money
as the High Master X. If it was'nt for mine having the newest S-ED flourite
glass, I may have come home with that !! There's always next year and the
next build.....LOL

March has a new one comming out..a wide angle and from what I hear its pretty good
according to the Nationals Winner Tim.
