Bullets for 30-06 in 1 - 12 twistI

Any suggestions on a target bullet up to a max. of 550 yds. I'm thinking of 150-175 grain wts. Brands and loads ? I'm thinking IMR 4895 , Varget ,Rl 15 . Any other thoughts?

Several months ago I built a 30/06A.I. It wears a 30" 1-10 Twist so I can shoot bullets of 200 grains or so. But with a 12 twist, you will not able to go past 185gr bullets. There are 2 EXCELLENT bullets in that weight, Berger 185 Juggernaut and the Berger 185 VLD. I have shot and currently use the 185 VLD. After trying several powders for the A.I. (by the way is only a 3 pct. increase in capacity) I believe that H4350 would be nigh on to impossible to beat. With a moderate, towards top end load, I was able to easily achieve 2890f.p.s. with the 185 VLD and it shoots VERY well. My load for that bullet is 56.5grs of H4350 with the VLD set 12 thousandths into the lands. I am quite certain the Juggs will do just as well.

gtl1946,
Try the BERGER 155.5 Fullbore target or our .30 caliber 168 VLD target. Both have an Optimal twist rate of 1-12 so you're good at any altitude. Out Optimal TWIST rate is based on a worst case scenario of 59 degrees at sea level so if you are at a high altitude you MAY even be able to use a bullet that has an optimal twist rate of 1-12". See information on our TWIST RATE CALCULATOR and how to interpret it correctly here:

Take care,

I'm shooting the 190 VLD match out of a 12 twist in my WSM and will be trying the 210 BT next.you can get by with a SG of 1.4 if your only shooting out to 550 yards.

Many moons ago James, I bought a Remington 700 LTR. It was a "tactical" .308 with a 20" barrel. It had a 1-12 on it and the MOST accurate bullet out of that bore was the Berger 185 VLD. A 1-12, with bullets not more than the 185 or like your 190, is fine out to 5-600 yards.

Don't be afraid of sightly compressed loads with slower powders - I have used Reloader 22 and H4831 with great accuracy. +3 for the Berger 185 Jugg. Outstanding accuracy in a 12" twist bbl.

The Berger Tech has recommended a 1-11" w/168 Hybrids or 155.5 fullbores which sounds good . Powders thus far would be Varget , H4350 , and 4895 .

H4350 has always been my favorite 30-06 powder. I would lean toward the 190 SMK, a bullet loaded long (close to or in the lands), and a near max load of H4350.

I was given a load for the .30-'06, purportedly an equivalent to the .30-'06 168gr FGMM load. I have no idea about that, but it shoots well in my Garand, and my Win M70 Featherweight.

WIN/HDY brass, 168SMK/(165SGK for deer), match primer, I use Fed or CCI, 48.1gr IMR-4064. This is supposed to be a moderate load, and shows no pressure signs in my guns, which pleases me from a brass preservation viewpoint.

I like to jump my bullets at least .010".

Sub MOA in my Featherweight at 250yd from a rest.

Greg
