bullet weight vs. base to ojieve length

Hey guys, when sorting a new lot of bullets, how does everyone do it (I've heard both ways) but was wondering how some of you on here do? Do you sort bullets with length from base to ojieve? or sort from weight of each bullet? Or both? I've done the weighing thing many times before, but didn't know if the measurement was what I really should be doing..

Thanks in advance for your input!

Do one and test, then do the other and test again. You will quickly figure out what works and what doesn't.

weighing helps a lot ogive to base length is another way but that depends on how you seat the bullets.
I don't think it matters much if your jumping the bullets. setting them into the lands is a different story.
Bullet length might be critical there.

i'v done it both ways and have found base to ogive alerts me as to whether it's worth checking weights. if bto measurements are very close then weights will be also...bto is quicker for me. if btos are all over the place, weights are also...i once measured and weighed 100 87 gr bullets and NONE!!! weighed 87 gr and there were a dozen bto measurements! the manufacturer replaced them...these were of the same lot BUT btoed and weighed the same? too often btos will be of two measurements and i have to sort these and load separately.

Can you please explain why it makes no difference when jumping but it matters if in the lands?

simply put the rifle doesn't know if the bullet is jumping .010 or . 015 etc, until it get a very long jump or to no jump.
or to a partial jump like some touching some not etc. although seating I believe is critical in the jam mode.
There seems to be some confusion by some people as to where to start. They read a hard jam and start there.
Its really just to touch and start there. WE know jamming the bullet raises pressure , The other way is jumping moderately and increasing the loads to get the pressure you need or should I say want and velocity. I know your not one of them as to whats going on.
My 308 loved a bullet jammed and a moderate load That's that particular rifle and barrel. My other 308 like them jumping and a hard jam say .020 into the lands.
My other 308 liked them missing about 30 and a hotter load . Ive seated them deeper into the case and nothing changed until i got to the point of .060 jump
before seeing a real difference The hot powders in the PPC like a jump to some extent like .010 on one of my shooters . when I use the slow powder then it likes to touch
or into the lands. as a bullet maker {i make my own} the bullets i make don't change in length that much. Only .001 to .002 in length.
The tips don't need to be closed either . If you have bullets that are different lengths and you have to sort them by length then I would try another brand ,
good bullets don't change that much to make a big difference.

I'm going to have to strongly disagree with this statement. Bullets "know" if you jump them .010" or .015" as the groups will change with as little as .001" movement depending on where you are on the seating depth node.

Go to Erik Cortina's YouTube channel, he did an interview with Bryan Litz and he asked that exact question. So get it straight out of the horse's mouth.

While you're there subscribe to Erik's channel, you'll be glad you did. Erik is a member at my range and one of the most helpful and kind people that I know, and a real mother lode of shooting knowledge.

Kindest regards,
