Bullet tipping ???

Hey guy's got a new Hoover bullet tipping die set up ;D what do you think of how these turned out? ::)
the 1 on the left is an un touched 175 SMK the 2 on the right are tipped 175 SMK's, my first attempt at this I have tipped about a dozen so far just to get the feel for this, IMO they look pretty decent what do you think?

I sure will ;D it'll be a short while before I'm able to get back out and do some testing with these bullet! my range is shut down >:( their rebuilding all the back stops and traps and making the shooting lanes bigger ;D but from what I'm seeing I can how this will improve the BC and accuracy at longer ranges ;) provided I'm doing this correctly? :o

I dont totally close the tips, I am scared to deform the bullet. Measure everything as you go, base to ogive bearing surface, diameter, oal. If something changes your deforming the bullet, oal will grow as you point, when it starts to shrink you are crushing the bullet.

They look nice. I also don't totally close the tips. Trim then point is my sequence. Several ways to do it and each person has their opinion on it. Whatever gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling. If you have some history shooting the 175 smk's untipped @ say 1000 you should see a come-up difference in moa. I noticed it with the berger 180's @ 1000. The trimmed and pointed shoot ever-so slightly flatter and in theory should buck the wind slightly better giving one a better margin for error on the wind/mirage reading. IMO its not worth the time & effort for 600yds on in. Also some bullet metplats are already quite small and uniform and wouldn't benefit from the pointing like the 180's do with their large metplat. Good luck and have fun with it! Eric in DL

thanks guy's keep it coming :) I have already discovered from the info posted I have changed the ojive measurement on these bullets >:( it has grown :o oop's ::)

You need to measure and sort bullets before pointing. I measure out in groups of .001", start with the longest and for every shorter lot, turn the pointing die down .001"..

Of course, they'll all have to re-sorted by bearing length before loading but that's just part of it.

OK, I have been sorting the bullets by ojive and oal before using them in the tipping tool, your guy's imput means allot!!!!!! ;D I have been looking for information on the net and YouTube for an in depth how to on the subject! I have not found any detailed information on how to or what to look for, I know you can put to much ram pressure on the bullet and distort the bullet, I'm at the point of understanding some what of how to do this thru this post and all the PM's you guy's have sent me suggesting other tools that my help me reach my goals and I'm really greatful for all your help ;D now I just need to get this process fine tuned a bit ::) I'm sure theirs other folks here who would benefit from this info a well as I, I know this seems like no big deal to some and some think theirs no benefit to tipping at all? but I'm wanting to try to take advantage of anything that my help my LR shooting ;) all info and thoughts if got them I want to hear them ;D

FWIW I just shot a long range match with pointed bullets for the first time and had three Berger FULLBORES come apart in flight. I over pointed them I believe and separated the jacket and core. Regardless, will now trim to OAL before tipping. They are not any more accurate but did show 1.5 moa less drop at 1000. You can assume some help in the windage department...

Hmmm.

I just trimmed and pointed some Berger Hybrids last night. 3 out of 100 had a piece of the jacket tear off instead of being cut. Looking at that, I was wondering if it would contribute to inflight breakup of the bullet.

The piece tended to tear away (outward) and hang on by its back end. If I had not trimmed and pointed, I would not have found the weaker jackets. Now, with the spinup forces, setback, and aerodynamic pressure at the meplat, would these pieces come loose in an unmodified bullet? If so, would it cause a breakup? At least, it would cause a low flyer shot (kind of like the unexplained 6-o'clock 8's that plague some shooters at 1000).

Looks like I'll be inspecting the meplat on all of my bullets for signs of this. The 3 that were bad will be fired as foulers, so I removed the extended piece and pointed them. I'll see if they'll hold together with full-house loads.

Interesting, a friend of mine has been having trouble with jackets in a certain lot he has.....I think it was juggernauts but i could be wrong.

According to Mr. Hoover, you want to close the tip to the point that It does not change your base to ogive measurement. You have gone too far when that dimension changes and are most likey deforming an area of the bullet.

excellent reply's here you never know what you'll find till you start to look? I believe I have found the set up for my die for tipping with all your guy's help ;D much appreciated with all the feed back and PM's from you all, you guy's are a great bunch here I have learned allot in a short time ;) I find the last posts something to consider I have also noticed on some of the Meplats their is slight splitting or cracks in the jackets, MMM :( something else that needs to be addressed :o

agreed :) I have noticed when I have closed the tip the Ojive changes, when I compress the nose down till it grows a few thou of an " it does not change the ojive but gives a nice tip to the meplat without going to far ;) if I'm correct ;D
