Bullet Tip Shape

I am reposting this from another forum, I did not get much response from my first posting, maybe it was in the wrong place.

Anyway about all I know is that the Tangent 8 ogive is pointier giving it a better BC.
Just wondering if one or the other stabilizes better and offers better accuracy.

I want to try some bullets from Precision Ballistics but am not sure which tip to order,
dual radius tangent 6/secant 9 at the tip, or a tangent 8 ogive at the tip.

I am looking for 90 and 95 gr., shooting from a Bartlien 6mm 5R, 1-8 twist, 24" barrel.
This will be used for bench rest and 200 yd. egg shoots.

Anyone willing to shed some light here?

Thanks,

John

John, I'd encourage you to call them, talk to Don and get his recommendation if you just want to order one or the other. Don is an exceptional shooter himself and knows his products very well. (Frankly, I'd order both and let the rifle tell you what it likes.) My hunch is that both will work in your application after some careful tuning of seating depth, neck tension, etc. ;)

I have shot the 6/9 in 95gr for several years now and have absolutely no complaints at all on his bullets. Good luck and let us know how it turns out for ya. :) WD

Berger bullets web page gives excellent information on the tangent, secant and hybrid shapes and their affects on BC and seating.

For 200 yard shooting, I think discovering which bullet is more accurate in you rifle is a lot more important than minor differences in BC. Trying to design a load by looking at the velocities in manuals and bullet BC information, particularly for shorter range applications, is pretty much folly. You will need to do actual testing to see what your rifle "likes". I find that this is best done loading at the range, that shooting test groups over a chronograph can provide additional useful information, and the use of wind flags, more reliable results.

Thanks guys. I looked at the Berger site, they seem to feel that the tangent tips are easier to get to shoot accurately so I think that is what I will try first. I have not had a lot of luck with the hybreds in another rifle with a similar barrel so I expect the tangent 6/secant 9's might behave the same but you never know....

Thanks,

John

John, I shoot the 6/9 95gr Boat tails from precision ballistics..... they were a snap to tune in all 3 rifles that I've used them in. Accuracy is exceptional. Trust me. ;) WD

His bullets are top notch and you should buy a couple different bullets and just shoot them like boyd said.I tried them and they shoot outstanding.I run the 68 grain which isnt something you would be shooting but I can tell you his dies and his skill make a fine projectile ,you will not be disappointed,IMHO.
