I have been using an OAL gauge with a 108 Burger bullet
I don't know what I'm doing wrong I check it five times come up with five different readings they're not even close
1.7055 to 1.780 please give me an idea what I'm doing wrong thank you Bill

Not a clue but if you take a fired case put some blue loctite inside the mouth all the way around, barely start a bullet in the case mouth and set it aside for 30 minutes. then push it into the chamber with whatever, dowel rod, cleaning rod, finger. Close the bolt. Extract it carefully and measure.

The throat may be a bit rough, I gently push the bullet in until it stops and get repeatable numbers.
Another method when using the aol tool is place the muzzle down and let gravity do the work.
( always use the same bullet )…

I like the locktite idea.
I take a fired case, insert a q tip through the flash hole, dab a little 2 part epoxy in the neck, insert bullet, drop in chamber, lightly push to contact, let cure. Brass Black to keep track of the dummies and engrave/label my measured BTO.
Solid dummy round.
Late Edit:
I bought a spare Hornady insert for the calibers I reload the most.
I reamed the .223 insert from the factory 0.213" hole to a 0.217" hole with a very slight chamfer, which gets me closer to a 0.219/0.224 bore. I think :)
Makes a difference on long sleek bullets.

This is the 0.213" insert Vs the 0.217" insert with a .224 Hornady 90gr A-Tip.

BTO= 0.701" Vs 0.658"

I have since marked the 0.217" insert with Aluminum Black.

Unclear exactly what you are measuring. OAL of a loaded round? Head to ogive length for a loaded round? If you are measuring to the tip -OAl - those numbers will be all over because of tip variability. If making and measuring a dummy cartridge, measure to the ogive, or case head to ogive. Using a brass case with a bullet in it and using the bolt to seat the bullet can be problematic if the neck is too tight and the bullet is pressed into and sticks in the lands. One method used long ago was to close the bolt, place cleaning rod into the bore and carefully mark the end of the barrel on the cleaning rod with tape. The, place a bullet in the chamber, push it gently against the lands with a pencil, dowel etc. Then place the cleaning rod in the bore and mark the muzzle with tape. The distance between the two tapes is your head to lands distance.
