Bullet seater for 20 Practical

I read that 20 Practical loaders are using 223 seaters. It seems to me having .020 slop in the seater's bullet channel is cause for concern. Wouldn't the slop lead to runout?

If there is no other choice but using a 223 seater would a Wilson or Redding seater be best?

A standard 223 seat die is what most have used with no problem. If you are concerned about potential runout you could have a custom die made, I highly recommend the Whidden Gunworks custom dies if you go that route.

You could just buy one of those micrometer seating tops, in .20 cal, and put it in the top of your seating die and go for it.......http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2011/02/redding-offers-new-micrometer-seating-stems-for-standard-dies/

A micrometer simply sets bullet seating depth. It has no influence on concentricity. Precision bullet seaters such as Redding and Wilson have close tolerances that precisely fit the bullet and case to keep them aligned during the seating process. Using a 223 seater to seat a .204 diameter bullet means you toss out the precision of that expensive bullet seater. Might as well just buy a cheap bullet seater IMO.

Whidden will make one for $167, takes about 8 weeks. Wilson is looking into this for me as well. I will let you know what I find out.

I believe one could use a RCBS 204 Ruger Competition Seater.

PS: Wilson could possibly open the neck area and the seater stem area of a 17 Remington seater. Before necking down, the 223 case is approx .036 shorter than the 17 Remington. Wilson modified a 204 seater in this manner for my 22-204 at a very reasonable cost..

I contacted Wilson who is interested in helping but they want a few fired cases from a 20 Practical and I don't have my barrel yet. Is there anyone here that can send Wilson a few cases? I will reimburse you for shipping and the brass if you will do so.

Thanks

Phil

If you have the reamer make one from a die blank if not pm me I will send some brass for you

I use a Redding 223 Remington Competition Seating Die and a Redding Competition Seater Die VLD Stem 20 Caliber - Long. I tried the Forster .223 micrometer seating die but the tips of 32 & 39 SBKs hit the seating stem causing varying seating depth. The Redding combo works with all .20 bullets and will give consistent depths. Gunstop was the vendor.

Sherm,

I do not have the reamer. I really appreciate your to offer to send the brass. Hopefully this will benefit a lot of 20 Practical owners.

DogBuster,

Have you check runout on any of the bullets seated by your Forster BR seater? Wilson said they think they can make a custom die for me. They won't know until they get the cases. If it doesn't work out I will try a 204 seater.

Thanks

Phil

The hot ticket is using the RCBS Competition seater with the micrometer top - the one that has the window to drop that little pill into. Buy the one made for .223, then order the .20 Caliber seating plug and .20 caliber sliding insert. Perfection!

I use a RCBS micrometer .223 seater for my 20 cals, never a issue seating in many thousands of rounds with it.

I have to put in a plug for LE Wilson company. L.Sherm kindly sent them some fired 20 Practical cases last week and Wilson has already completed a custom bullet seater for it! Great customer service...

If anyone else wants a bullet seater from Wilson for their 20 Practical give them a call.

I use a Redding 223 competition micrometer seating die for my 20 Practical and it works great. No run-out issues as far as I've experienced.

like others have said, I think you could have used a 223, 204 20 tactical or even a 20 vartarg seater. but it's always nice to have a dedicated die for the caliber you are loading for. however, I don't think it will make it will make your kill ratio go up. there's only one way to know for sure. load several hundred with the new die and several hundred with the old die and I will shoot them for you and post the results. it's the scientific approach.

I'll get on that this morning Jim!
