Bullet runout

Where to measure on the bullet. Here's a vid I made that shows the question I'm asking better better.

Germán A. Salazar says to give the bullet a twist inside Sinclair’s hex shaped bullet comparator and then setup the gauge to read runout where the comparator left a ring about the ogive, or very near the point on the ogive that makes first contact with the lands.

I don't mark the bullet like Olefreak, but I measure about that location...where the bullet measures full diameter below the taper. Closer to the case shows less runout that what I think there really is.

I’m assuming he’s talking about a method of finding where on the ogive of ‘a’ bullet to do the reading, and not boogerin’ up the ogive of every bullet in the batch you’ll be checking for projectile runout.

IMHO...If you are only interested in seating straightness, then on the ogive is the correct area as mentioned. The farther you go toward the tip after that may also show bullet body straightness.

As an aside, depending on the exact bullet you are shooting, the degree of the cut on the case neck chamfer can make a huge difference in run out -- flat base, BT with tangent ogive, BT with secant ogive -- they can all want something different. I always treat the case neck and chamfer with the same precision as the crown of the barrel. Give it a try.

Sorry if a little off topic, but the thought just came to my mind.
