Tell that to Dave Tooley ( well known gunsmith and 1000yds benchrest shooter), he and a few other shoot a 30 cal 187gr FB for 1000yds Benchrest, and win lots of matches. I have talked to Dave about flat base for long range, many times, they tune better, and shoot better groups. I have shot 68 gr. and 80gr. 6mm bullets out to 600 yds. with great results. if the wind is up, the low BC will cost you in wind drift.

The (nearly extinct) BIB 187 Gr. FB has a Doppler RADAR measured BC (G1) of
.525; during the Doppler session, and up to that date, at White Sands NM,
the most UNIFORM BC of any projectile ever fired. The only problem with FB bullets, is that they require an extra degree of specialization - primarily, a longish free-bore - which few individuals can get their head around and keep a firm grip!

The best 1K results have been achieved via 1:12" & 1:13" twist barrels; the down side being a "throat" length which is about right for most 210-220 Gr. bullets, for which these twist rates are inadequate. Thus, no safety net for a barrel which does not "like" the 187 BIB FB.
If one Jeff Rodgers (Australia) were to post his accomplishments (600 to 1,000 Yd.), one might be mildly impressed.
Jeff used to post on the BenchRest Central 600/1000 Yd. forum, as ajr:
http://benchrest.com/forumdisplay.php?12-600-1000-Yard-Benchrest But, he's a pretty modest sort. As are Dave Tooley, Joel Pendergraft, and Charles Ellertson - all of whom enjoyed success using the bullets that won't work.
Many USA records, from single groups, to National Championships (group, score & overall), and multi match, season, etc., for Jeff, in OZ, where he pretty much rewrote the record books not once, but, twice, owning something like all but three, or, four, of the nearly 30 record possibilities . . . but, that was a year ago, and things may have changed . . .
