Bullet pointing the 105 hybrids

Hello guys.

I just bought the Hoover trimming and pointing system. I'd like to know how much people are trimming the meplats and after the pointing, is anyone trimming again? The hybrids are at 1.257 long now, it look like 10 thousands off is what it could use to even or square them up. After pointing them, they get slightly longer than that but they look better after re trimming them again. When I'm all said and done, they are at 1.247 long.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Alan, I've only done a few hundred so take this for what it's worth.. :-\

I haven't trimmed the meplats, before or after pointing. I'm able to close the tip without making a separate "cone" at the point (if you run the die down too far, you'll see this) and that's enough for me.
I would imagine trimming first would be one way to ensure they're the same length.

They should all be the same length before you point or you will have some irregularity in the shape of the meplats.

The meplats are pretty small on those bullets in the first place - - I really wonder if it's worth doing it to those.

When I point them I will usually take a sample of 10-15 bullets out of the box. I measure them and set my trimmer up to take .002 off the shortest bullet. I got the typical 5%-6% increase when I pointed the 105 hybrids. The G1 matched up with .585 out to 1000 yards.

I point them also, 1000s of rounds. For accuracy at 1K, less is more. Some bullets don't need it.
Hoover gear is the best.

Greg, Have you tried the MCR trimmer and counter bore? In my opinion, it works better if you are going to point up after trimming. The counter bore removes additional material inside the meplat so that you get a nice clean point up.

Derek,
I have only used Hoover and Widden. I have struggled with the middle alot. Hoover's video just shuts the 6.5 down. The Dasher crushes the base if I try to copy that. Some I meplat before, some after and some twice lightly on both. Typically I meplat trim, die and meplat again. I will definitely try the MCR. Great .02. Thanx!

For the 1K matches in F Open I trim, point and trim. I agree the more consistent the bullet on all rounds the better chance of holding the POI at that distance. I talked to John Whidden once about this and his reply then was that for the big matches he both trimmed and pointed his bullets. Guess being a multi national champion he should know something about the benefits of trimming and pointing.
I have never felt it hurt to either trim or point the hybrids.

If you have a Giraud trimmer & some die shims... the trim-point-trim sequence becomes *really* easy...

As several have said, I trim to the shortest of the sampling of the lot that I am working with, then point them until the point isn’t completely closed, but very close. I’m certainly not a John Whidden, but this has worked for me for years.

If you want to test do it under a controlled condition. Trim and point does work at 1K........ jim
