I agree with Erik, and not so much with the guy selling you gadgets.
A bullet is engraved and obturated as it will be within an inch, and nothing beyond is different from ~10thou of who knows what bullet variance.
The practice of base to ogive datum does not define the bearing itself. Nor does it define the base itself. Even the ogive datum is not defined here while presenting ogive radius variances.
And I doubt the guy telling you what he looks at actually knows.
Bullet weight actually is a factor that can be taken to physics standards. You should not be seeing variance here of more than ~.1gr, and so far none of the bullets I've bought have been so bad. I spot check a new lot of bullets(~30 random), that's it.
If I had suspected a bad batch from this, I'd engage further myself.
I haven't run across diameter differences from lot to lot that have made any difference.
As far as meplat trimming, this is really nose trimming(to the same length). I would not do this without first qualifying ogive radius/datums.
The very last thing you need is same length noses(meaningless) while leaving varied meplat diameters(huge affect on BC).
Pointing is a good move regardless. Gadget guy did good there.
