Bullet at +4000 fps

Which bullet manufacture makes a .224 caliber bullet that can withstand +4000 fps? I am thinking maybe a 30 or 40 grain bullet. What is the best twist rate, 14 or 15? And what barrel Length? Thanks for your input...

Nosler 40 Ballistic tips will. 14 twist will run em nicely.

The only 40 gr I tried is the V Max at 4100 out of my 220 Swift, it was fine. Other 50 gr bullets include Speer, Hornady, Nosler solid base, Winchester and Remington. None blew up. Also 55 gr Hornady sp, and 60 gr HP, all were fine. YMMV. Barlow

I had a 14 twist 22-243 that would run the 40 grain Ballistic Tips at 4600 via H-414 w/o issues.

I had the 40 vmax up to 4397 fps but accuracy was not good. That was in a 12 twist 26" barrel.

It looks like everyone agrees that a 14 twist would be the ticket. So am I safe to assume that with a combination of a slow twist, very light bullet and fast burning powder will produce high velocities? I’m thinking of a wildcat based on a modified BR case

I have a 22-6mm Remington AI that shoots 50 grain Bal tips at over 4300 fps and never had one come apart till it hit something.

Nosler ballistic tips all the way, they have a thick base. I shot 12T, 22/250 Ai, 50g Noslers BT at 4175 fps with Win 760, zero freebore, 27" barrel with super accuracy.

55g Nosler ballistic tips at 4075-4100 performed better than the slightly faster 50g ballistic tips at 450-500 yds on p. dogs, no surprise there.

The 223 AI using N133 in a zero freebore, 12 or 14T will shoot the 40g Noslers at 4100 in a 26" barrel with bug hole groups.

AckleymanII, to answer your question, I guess I’m trying to fix what ain’t broke...I enjoy shooting my little 221 Fireball at approximately 3650 FPS but I can’t leave well enough alone. So I came you with this crazy idea to build a super Fireball. I settled on using a 6BR case with the shoulder pushed back to make the case to mimic the Fireball to get more fuel in the tank. I want more speed with less powder then used in the Swift, 22-243 or 22-6mm size cases.

To the gentlemen with your large capacity 22's (22-6mmAI, 22-243, etc.), are these barrel burners? I have a 12T 223AI which I have only been able to achieve +/-3800 fps before running into pressure using 50-52gr bullets, but I will explore the 40's this season.

Excellent results with Sierra 50 gr Blitz King 220 Swift @ 39 to 4100. 38 t0 40 gr 4064.

36 grain Barnes at 4400 fps out of 220 swift 27 inch barrel. We were shooting pd in high wind and 36 grain bullets were blown around a lot. Might be worth another try.

RonS, another solution to speed with accuracy in the extreme. First, the 55g 6mm nolser ballistic tip, has a better BC than the 22 caliber counter part.

So, a 12 or 14T 6 BR has an accuracy node in a 27" barrel that is 3900 fps with AA2230 or H335. The 6 BRX and the Dasher with the same is 4100 fps, and both of these cases shoot tiny, tiny groups.

Concerning the 223 AI with the 40g and N133, use a thick cup primer(BR-4 or 7 1/2), and use a drop tube. I have found N133 to have a pressure spike as temp changes, so I work up loads at 75-80*. The old lots of AA2015 would achieve the same accuracy and Velocity as the N133. I am using IMI brass which I think was made by lapua many years ago.

If you are reinventing the wheel on a fast bullet, the 6 BRX(or Dasher using approx. 33g of powder) is an easy way to go, and the 55g Nosler ballistic tip at 4100 is impressive with very little powder. The Nosler 55g holds up much better than the 22 caliber 40g at 300 yards when shooting varmints.

RonS, if you are wanting to stick to the 22 caliber bullets on some kind of a exotic longer formed case AI'd to make a long fire ball, it is going to be hard to beat a 223 AI. If you have a PPC bolt face, then a 22 Grendel maybe where you want to go?? Would be fun anyway!
