Built a new rifle

I enlarged it slightly and it seems that the bolt isn't quite finished yet. Some of the parts are below the stock.

The background is very confusing for seeing the details of the rifle.

;)
Correct I have the bolt apart, it is a Large Ring 98 Mauser I had laying around for many years.

My sons best friend came in the kitchen the other day, asked me how much it would cost him for me to build him a rifle. Knowing the kid works hard to support his mother and siblings and is a good boy I said $10,000.00 smiling. Then I asked him what he wanted and basically he wants a meat gun for deer. I told him I would buy what was needed and build it for free for him, the boy smiled ear to ear. Having a few old Mauser actions laying around I decided on .308, not because I like .308 but because it is readily available to buy and does not require bolt face or magazine modification on the Mauser. All his hunting will be 200 yards or less.

I ordered a Nutmeg stock from boyds, a 1.25" Green Mountain raw barrel blank, and EGW steel scope mount, and steel rings. I had to do some inletting of the stock but not to much to free float the barrel. I also blueprinted the action.

I turned that chunk of barrel metal from 1.25" to the profile you see in the picture end of barrel is .700 length is 22". I still need to drill and tap the receiver for the scope mount, make a bolt handle and weld on and then chamber and headspace. I am also going to turn and cut threads for a muzzle break. Then I will Cerikote the metal and he should have a nice rifle. I am going to donate one of my scopes for him, I think a Burris.

You sir are one of life's gentlemen the world needs more of you

A great act of charity. You are to be commended.
I sincerely admire you, and weather you know it or not the character is a result of your parents upbringing!

Nice! I would like details on the action plus what you did to the feed rails and mag box for the WSM case.
You just have to open the mag rails up a bit and open the bolt face on a lathe. The bolt handle was made on my lathe and welded on, ground to clear. Ill try to get a pic tomorrow after I hunt.

Which Mauser?
The crest had been ground off years ago so I am not sure but it is a large ring 98 of some make or another. That's the WSM anyway, the .308 is on a YUGO Mauser action. I have built a few 300wsm Mauser's over the years on just about every type of 98 and never had issues with bolt setback. Admittedly I am hand loading in the middle of the book though, factor ammo tends to a good bit be hotter than my loads. If memory serves me I am using H380 at 60grs on a 168gr Berger VLD Hunter.

Finally finished the X-mas rifle for my sons best bud. I ended up doing it in .308 turned the barrel from a 1.25" 1-10 twist blank from Green Mountain barrels. It is .700 at the muzzle. I decided I would buy him a scope also just seemed right. Put a nice Athlon 6-18x 44 on it, it is a clear scope for the money and should hunt well. That was my last ole Mauser action laying around, well except for a Siamese action I have no idea what to do with as I do not want another 45-70. I finished the stock in boiled Linseed oil and used a gun coating of my own creation.

I usually set headspace on my rifles pretty tight but I set this one factory so he can buy and shoot any factory ammo.
