Building a 'Hunter' 30 BR: Help needed

Seriously considering putting together a Hunter 30 BR for our club benchrest matches. May take one of my current prone guns apart for basis: have both a RPA Quadlock and a Kelby Big Bore action . Am wondering if any of these actions with barrel and scope will make weight, I believe weight is 11.5 lbs, ? ). Or should i start with a lighter action and leave the two rifles alone. Any info appreciated .

there are several classes in score, hunter class which is a 6 power scope class has a weight limit of 10 lbs,30br won't fit this category because it doesn't carry enough powder,it would fit in the varmint hunter class though, this is the same as hunter but for smaller case capacities, vfs is 13.5 lbs & no scope limitations with a 3' forearm, this is where you'll find most 30br's,forgot to mention the forearm width on hunter & varmint hunter in 2.25',hope that helps you out

So I would be building a varmint Hunter, score rifle. Weight limit would be 13.5 lbs. with a scope, have a 8 x 32 NXS that weighs about 6 lbs.... ). maybe I need to look into a smaller action, or a much lighter scope set-up.There are probably 20 or so fellow club members shooting these and they all shoot so well that it made me want one.

varmint hunter would limit you to 10 lbs & a 6 power scope,& a 2.25' wide forearm, varmint for score is the 13.5 lbs with unlimited scope power & a 3 inch wide forearm

reread your post & think you better reweigh your scope! should be 2 lbs plus a few ounces at most,my nightforce 12-42br only weighed about 35 ounces

Signut, assuming the you intend to attend IBS Registered events, you appear to be somewhat confused regarding the classifications: Except for the case capacity & caliber restrictions, VARMINT HUNTER,VH) and HUNTER are governed by the same rules - essentially, these are restricted to 6X scope magnification,or, a variable set and taped at 6X); maximum weight, including sights is 10.0 pounds; maximum for-end width is 2.25'. The HUNTER class has a MINIMUM case capacity requirement of 45 Gr. of water and a MINIMUM caliber requirement of .23'; the VARMINT HUNTER has NEITHER case-capacity, NOR [minimum] caliber restriction.

VARMINT for Score,VfS) has TWO weight categories:1) LIGHT VARMINT,10.5 pounds, including sights);2) Heavy Varmint,13.5 Lb., including sights); neither has a minimum caliber restriction. There are no restrictions on scope magnification.

Most Registered VfS tournaments are of the HV version, thus, any of the lighter rifles are eligible to compete along with the 13.5 pound rigs. The majority of the people who build 30BR rifles use 13.5 Lb. rifles.

However, if you're shooting local [un-registered] club matches, none of this may apply - you'd then be at the mercy of the various club rules . . .

Good shootin'! RG

Heavy varmit it is. The 'weight ' posted on the NXS was meant to be tongue in cheek, it only feels like that much sitting on a prone gun around the 18th round of a 20 round match. Seems like everyone has a good time with class of rifle and i need another project . Thanks all for the input and info.
