Building A ELR Rifle

I went out shooting with a friend of mine this morning and he had his 338 Lapua shooting Berger 300 gr. TAC bullets with 91.5 grs. of H1000. I was shooting a 6.5 Creedmoor. We were both shooting the same MOA at 500 yards then things changed fast when we got to 800 and a 1000 yards. He only needed 14 moa at 800 and 17 moa at 1000. I was really impressed until he asked if I wanted to try the rifle. It's a hunting rifle made by some guy in Idaho, Brockman's rifles. Anyway, I shot it and it almost knocked me off my stool. I would say it was severe and never want to shoot it again. You guys are in a different world, but am very impressed.
I refused to shoot my buddy’s new 338/378 hunting rifle.

He has since sold it. Lol!
I’m ok with African big game rifles but those light 300 and 338’s hurt as I have pretty messed up shoulders especially the shooting side.

My 338 is pretty spicy but it weighs 25 pounds with an awesome brake.

Come on man, ain't that bad. It's how the rifle put together. Wife never shot anything bigger than 6.5-47 Lapua but, here she was shooting my 375 Cheytac, scoring two hits at 3080 yards.

Definitely need a heavier rifle for me to shoot more than one shot.
With a good brake, a 338 Lapua is manageable on a 16 lb. rifle. My 375 Cheytac weigh 38 lbs. but with good brake combined with mercury compensator in the butt stock, the recoil is very mild. My wife can easily shoot the 400 grain Cutting Edge at over 3,000 fps in competition with no problem whatsoever.

my 11lb fully loaded 338 lapua imp. 300 grain bergers at 3,000 fps.

not gonna say it would be comfortable to shoot all day but it's very tolerable.

Those modern stocks with a pistol grip and a muzzle brake look like they work good. It seemed different without one. I must just be getting old.

wonder if the faster pressure curve of the retumbo makes the recoil "worse" because of the faster impulse vs the slower burning powder like n570
I haven't tried any powder slower than Retumbo. I'm not familiar with N570. I used Reloader 50 on my 375 Cheytac shooting the 400 grain Cutting Edge. My Cheytac weigh about 38 lbs. Here's my wife shooting it for the first time. Actually she was more shocked with the 8 ounce trigger than the recoil of the 375. After this initial shock, she went on to shoot at our monthly ELR comp. She like the rifle so much that I ended up giving it to her.

I have a 338/378 it does hit you hard when you pull the trigger, but no worse than my Ithica slug shotgun
with 3" sabboted slugs.

I own a 338LM and a 300NM35˚IMP. The farthest I have found to get some ELR distance has been 1800 yards. My preference would be the 300NM IMP but the 338LM is not uncomfortable to shoot due to the 25 pound weight and the Terminator 5 port brake.
Since being "ported" (for chemo) and "back-bored" (prostate) I've not even had them out of the safe since summer 2024.
Bunches of Retumbo and quite a fair amount of RL33 but it seems the 300 likes powders in the H1000 zone.
I understand Jackie not wanting to do anything to foul up his muscle memory for free recoil because I couldn't take much free recoiling a 338LM.
