Building A ELR Rifle

Good day,
I recently had a .338 RUM built, Stiller TAC 300 action, Obermyer HV contour 1-9.5” 30” barrel, McMillan A-5, MBM Beast 5 port and a Murphy 60moa rail. I did barrel break in and quick zero @ 200yds. B300 OTM, 84.0gr H-1000, 2615fpsMV. These were the first 2 shots @ 600yds.

It’s rather timely that this thread is running at this time. If I use the Shehane Tracker Stock, I am going to have to figure a way to mount a suitable Bypod.

With a standard magnum bolt face. Probably a 338 edge?

For mounting the bipod maybe inlet 2 or 3 drilled and tapped pillars in the bottom of the forend. Could drill through from the barrel channel and come back with a spade bit and make the pillars like a top hat so they can't pull through the stock. Then you can bolt a picatinny or acra rail to the bottom side and extend it out past the end of the forend if you need.

That should work.

Keep in mind, I am a Short Range Benchrest Shooter that has never even touched a Bipod, much less owned one, so this is new territory :)

Jackie, why are you wanting to go with the 338 RUM over a 300 or 338 lapua mag. imp?
You could also go with a 300, 338 Norma mag imp.
Is it because you already have the bolt or just want to keep the recoil down a bit less?
Both the Lapua's and Norma's have plenty of info and support.
I'm sure you could find or just buy the bigger bolt from Bat.

If your not competing in ELR competitions and weight is of no issue then have a look at a Phoenix precision bipod. Easy to get fine adjustment on height and rigid. I use a Seb for FTR and the joystick function is nice but it's built to a weight and I wouldn't like to put a heavy boomer on it.

With a accutac style bipod the hight adjustment is pretty course so it's easier if the stock has a fairly steep angle on the butt to make height adjustment. If you have a tracker style / virtually flat stock then having fine adjustment in the front is going to help. After that then treat it like old school bag squeezer BR. A good muzzle brake is also a huge advantage.

I’m going with the 338 Lapua Imp. I am ordering a new bolt for my Bat M with the Lapua bolt face, as I do not wish to open up my existing bolt.
I have no intention of getting involved with any Formal Competitions, I shoot Short arange Group and Score for that.

This is just a fun project.

The adjustable bag rider is the way I went.
Fine adjustment at your fingertips.

My bipod hooks to a picatinny section under the forend. And with the high legs apex barrel twist effects on recoil are basically absent.

That’s my local 1500 to 2380yard spot a short drive from home.
Wonderful place to enjoy a cigar.

There are two options i have employed.

For F/TR i have an Shehane ST 1000 and had installed a anschutz rail glued and secured with three screws plus 3 (4 prong t nuts) using the seb bipod pic adapter it slides into the anschutz rail without issue, or you can make the pic rail adapter. The LRA f class bipod (horse collar version) attaches without contacting the sides on stocks with 3" forends.
OR
Get a 4-6 inch length pic rail .500 or taller (to clear the bipod attachment and the bottom of the stock)
using the same screws and (4 prong t nuts).

The link shows the pic rail attachment and bipod clearance

I would avoid using the Harris sling stud as an option as larger recoiling calibers enjoy ripping the sling stud out of the stock.

cheers
Trevor

If anybody happens to have a 338;Lapua bolt, what is the recommended diameter of the counterbore on a coned bolt.

I am thinking about using my existing bolt, which has the regular 308 bolt face, and converting it to a drop port for the 338 Lapua case. I have to do some measuring to see just where the front of the cut away will be. Since it will be single shot, It shouldn’t be a problem.

I have done several drop port conversions, just never one involving a case this large.

Enjoy Jackie, fun project.

We are lucky here, you can travel 30 minutes and shoot as far as you want, no people either. Jon Beanland built me a 338 Lapua (the bottom one) years ago, Alex Wheeler built me a 300 NMI improved a couple years ago. Both have terminator brakes and are mild enough that my wife and daughters shoot them, if you have sinus issues they will clear it I might add. It’s a lot of fun to pull the trigger, wait seconds for impacts, watch the vapor trails etc etc. That Valdada on the 338 is made for that stuff, great optic. Best enjoyed with someone calling out impacts or misses, if I’m shooting solo I’ll set up the spotter and attach my phone so I can review what I did if I need to.

Your in for a treat.

Is that the Valdada Terminator?
It’s a recon gen I, we use that rifle for some hunting situations It’s small than the terminator but the terminator would be a better choice for dedicated long range, it has more power. That 40mm tube is big but it doesn’t take up as much real estate as you would think. Optics are amazing, built like a tank, lots of vertical and it tracks!

I’m jealous by the way, pretty cool you build your own rifles!
